Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Basketball picks up huge road win behind Pearson's double-double

Final Score:  Lipscomb: 70, North Alabama: 59
Location:  Florence, Ala. (Flowers Hall)
Records:  Lipscomb: 9-18 (4-10 ASUN), North Alabama 12-14, 7-7 ASUN)

THE SHORT STORY:  Lipscomb turned it on in the second half by shooting nearly 60 percent from the floor and outscoring UNA by 14 points in the fourth quarter to earn a 70-59 road win Saturday at Flowers Hall.

Blythe Pearson's career-high effort helped put a stop to an 8-game losing skid for the Bisons and kept them in contention for a first-round home game in the ASUN Championship with two regular season games to play.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Playing their fourth game in eight days, the Bisons got off to a slow start in the first half. UNA used an 11-5 run to build a six-point lead late in the opening quarter, but Pearson put the Bisons on her back and scored 10 consecutive points for the purple and gold, including a pair of triples. Down six with just over a minute to play in the period, Pearson connected on a handoff three from the right wing, before Jalyn Holcomb banked in a deep shot just before the buzzer to tie the game at 15-15 at the end of the first quarter.

Slow starts in the second quarters of games have become a trend for Lipscomb and it was no different in Florence through the first five minutes as UNA rattled off a 10-0 run to build a 25-15 advantage. However, Sydney Shelton nailed a three-pointer to give the Bisons their first points of the quarter and the momentum began to shift.

After the Lions pushed their lead back to double-digits, Maddie Cook and Jordan Peete attacked the paint and made three straight buckets to close the half on a 6-0 run and send the Bisons into the locker room down just 30-26.

The Lions got off to a hot start in the second half with back-to-back makes from Skyler Gill before a pair of free throws put Lipscomb in a 36-28 hole just 2:24 into the third period.

Holcomb stopped the bleeding after taking a pass from Peete and burying a 3-pointer to spark an 8-2 Lipscomb run and get it back to a two-point game. But like they had done all game as the ASUN's 2nd-leading three-point shooting team, UNA needed just one minute to stretch their advantage back out to 46-38 with 3:12 on the clock.

From there Holcomb stole the ball from the Lions and Cook finished at the rim on the other end. Shelton drove around the defense after an assist from Holcomb and then Cook laid another one in at the buzzer to bring Lipscomb to within three heading into the fourth period at 47-44.

In the fourth quarter, Coach Lauren Sumski found success by stretching her offense and driving at the rim. It was a move the Lions had no answer for. Of the seven field goals made in the final 10 minutes, seven of them came from the paint.

Pearson knocked down her third trey of the day to keep the offense rolling. Cook scored six points from the paint, before Holcomb gave Lipscomb its first lead of the day at the 6:32 mark with a layup feed from Cook. A couple minutes later, Holcomb and Peete made back-to-back buckets to give the Bisons a 6-point advantage and put a dagger in the Lions heart.

Pearson and Holcomb sealed the game at the free throw line down the stretch as UNA never got any closer.
