Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops defeats Sugar Bears to clinch home game in ASUN Tournament

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – With hosting rights on the line, the Lipscomb women's basketball team locked up the No. 4 seed in the West Division and earned a home game next week in the ASUN Championship after defeating Central Arkansas 50-46 Saturday afternoon in Allen Arena.

The Bisons (10-19, 5-11 ASUN) struggled shooting the ball and trailed for nearly 25 minutes, but their defense clamped down late and hit 10 free throws in the fourth quarter to complete the comeback on senior day.

Lipscomb will welcome No. 5 seed from the East Division North Florida to Nashville on Wednesday for the first round of the conference tournament. Tip is set for 7 p.m. in Allen.

The Bisons started the game 1-of-9 from the floor and trailed 9-1 on the scoreboard before a pair of buckets trimmed the deficit to 11-9 at the end of the first quarter.

Maddie Cook knocked down a jumper to start the second period before Bella Vinson drained a 3-pointer to give Lipscomb its first lead of the day at 14-13.

The Bisons missed their next four shots and found themselves trailing once more before trading buckets with the Sugar Bears through the end of the second quarter, where Central Arkansas led 22-21 at the half.

Lipscomb shot just 36.4 percent in the first 20 minutes and made only 8-of-22 field goals.

The Bisons came out rolling early in the third quarter as Dorie Harrison got going with six-straight points to put the home team up 27-24. But the struggles hit again, this time UCA took advantage with a 10-2 run and built a five-point advantage.

Jalyn Holcomb cut in the deficit with a three-pointer before Vinson got a jumper to fall off the glass at the buzzer to send the Bisons to the fourth quarter down just 36-35.

The purple and gold quickly flipped the momentum with a layup from Jordan Peete and another three from Holcomb just 1:12 into the period to give Lipscomb a 40-36 lead.

But every time it seemed like the Bisons would pull away, the Sugar Bears had an answer. They fought back and tied the game three times in the quarter, but Lipscomb continued to pull back in front at the free throw line.

After Holcomb's three at the 8:48 mark, Lipscomb scored its final 10 points at the free throw line while holding the Sugar Bears off the scoreboard en route to victory.
