THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb surged to a 21-7 victory Tuesday night at Tennessee Tech behind four multi-hit performances from the Bisons.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb jumped out to an early lead, quickly getting to the Tennessee Tech starting pitcher.
John Shields and
Maddux Houghton earned two quick free passes and were successful on a double steal to put two in scoring position. With one out,
Malik Williams picked up a pair of RBI with a single to center field for a 2-0 Lipscomb lead.
The Bisons continued to bother the Golden Eagles and loaded the bases.
Ethan Stamps and
August Haymaker took advantage with back-to-back fielders' choice RBI for a 4-0 lead after the top of the first.
Michael Dunkelberger earned his third start of the season on the mound and got the job done in the bottom of the first. After two quick outs, TTU delivered a double, but Dunkelberger pitched around the hit and fanned the last guy out to keep the 4-0 Lipscomb lead.
Lipscomb put another two runs on the board in the top of the second. After the Bisons batted around in the first, Shields led off once again. He ripped a single through the right side and later stole second to get himself in scoring position. With one out,
Mason Lundgrin delivered an RBI double for a 5-0 lead. The final run of the top of the second came when
Rudy Maxwell doubled and scored Lundgrin for the 6-0 lead.
Dunkelberger worked around a leadoff hit in the top of the second to keep zeroes on the board for the Lipscomb defense.
Caleb Ketchup added to the Lipscomb lead in the top of the third when he hammered a two-out solo shot over the left center field fence. His first career home run gave the Bisons a 7-0 lead.
The Bisons scored for the fourth-consecutive inning after the first two batters reached on free passes. With one out and a runner at third, Maxwell got his second RBI of the day with a sacrifice fly to right field for an 8-0 lead.
Chandler Giles came to the mound in relief for Lipscomb in the bottom of the fourth. He struggled to find the strike zone, issuing two free passes to start his outing. Tennessee Tech took advantage and scored a run to end the shutout, but Giles found his rhythm and froze the final batter he faced in the inning to limit the Golden Eagles' damage to just a run.
The Bisons responded with another big inning in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back base hits by Stamps and
Tiger Borom gave Lipscomb a good start to the inning. A sacrifice fly and Shields RBI single gave Lipscomb a 10-0 lead. A bases-loaded hit batsman and another sacrifice fly kept the inning going with two more runs. All told, Lipscomb had a 12-1 lead heading into the bottom of the fifth.
TTU took advantage of a Lipscomb error in the bottom of the fifth and scored three unearned runs to cut into the Bisons lead 13-4.
Lipscomb continued the trend of scoring in every inning with four runs in the top of the sixth. The Lead ballooned out to 16-4 after three hits and three walks in the inning.
The Golden Eagles got a pair back in the bottom of the seventh to cut into the Lipscomb lead 16-6. TTU scored another in the bottom of the eighth with a solo home run for a 16-7 ball game heading into the ninth inning.
Lipscomb put up a three-spot in the top of the ninth. Maxwell started things with a walk and
Trace Willhoite stepped in the batter's box and swung at the first pitch he saw and crushed a ball over the left field fence for an 18-7 lead. A
David Coppedge single and two free passes loaded the Lipscomb bases.
Hayden Skipper worked a good at bat and was hit by a pitch to drive another run across home plate. A Houghton RBI single and fielders' choice RBI scored two more as Lipscomb saw its lead increase 21-7 as it
