THE SHORT STORY

Lipscomb Baseball wasn't able to hold on to an early lead as the Bisons fell 6-4 in game two of the three-game series against Jacksonville State Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Jacksonville State threatened to take an early lead with a leadoff double and a single, putting runners on the corners with no outs. Starting pitcher Logan Van Treeck, however, got out of the jam with a pair of strikeouts and a pop fly to keep things scoreless.

Lipscomb took advantage with a leadoff triple from John Shields. He quickly scored when Maddux Houghton singled up the middle for a 1-0 lead. Houghton stole second and advanced to third on a wild pitch to get himself in scoring position. He later crossed home plate when Mason Lundgrin delivered a one-out ground ball for a 2-0 lead after the first inning.

After a pair of scoreless innings, Trace Willhoite added a run to the Bisons' lead in the bottom of the fourth when he barreled a ball over the left center field fence. His 399-foot home run gave Lipscomb a 3-0 lead after four complete.

Things quickly changed in the fifth inning when the Gamecocks scored six runs to flip the script with a 6-3 lead.

The Bisons responded in the bottom of the fifth when Houghton send a no-doubter over the left field fence for a leadoff home run to cut the JSU lead 6-4. Lundgrin and Malik Williams had back-to-back hits after the long ball, but a double play and fly ball ended the inning before Lipscomb could do any more damage.

The final four innings were scoreless on both sides of the ball as the Bisons fell to 0-2 on the year in ASUN play.

HERD NOTES
  • Ethan Stamps, Houghton and Williams all had multi-hit outings.
  • Three of Lipscomb's nine hits were for extra bases, including two home runs.
  • The Bisons turned two double plays on the afternoon.
