THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball struggled for the timely hits all afternoon as the Bisons dropped the final game of the series to Jacksonville State 6-3 Sunday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons got on the board first in the bottom of the second to take a 1-0 lead.
Malik Williams notched a leadoff hit, but a double play quickly erased the base runner and put Lipscomb in a two-out hole. The rally started when
Rudy Maxwell singled through the left side. Another hit from
Ethan Stamps forced an errant throw and Maxwell took advantage and scored for the 1-0 lead.
Jacksonville State quickly responded with a three-run homer in the top of the third to surge out to a 3-1 lead. The Gamecocks added another pair of runs in the top of the fourth for a 5-1 lead.
Lipscomb got a run back in the bottom of the fourth with three-straight singles to load the bases. Stamps picked up an RBI with a sacrifice fly to make it a 5-2 game. The Bisons threatened to get more runs back, but a pair of fly balls stranded the Lipscomb bases loaded.
Lipscomb's pitching staff shut down the Jacksonville State offense, facing the minimum through the next three innings.
The offense shaved the Gamecock's lead to a pair in the bottom of the sixth. Maxwell started things with a double down the left field line. A
Chaz Bertolani RBI single scored Maxwell as the JSU lead shrunk 5-3. The Bisons threatened again in the bottom of the seventh with two runners on and Maxwell representing the go-ahead run at the plate. He connected on a deep fly ball, but the JSU outfielder made the catch at the wall to keep Lipscomb off the board in the seventh.
Jacksonville State scored an insurance run in the top of the ninth and the Bisons were unable to battle back and ultimately fell 6-3.
