THE SHORT STORY

A third inning three-run home run by Malik Williams propelled Lipscomb Baseball to a 6-2 victory over No. 15 Louisville Tuesday night at Patterson Stadium.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lipscomb took a quick lead in the top of the first. Maddux Houghton worked a one-out walk and was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt. He scored when Malik Williams knocked a single to right field for a 1-0 lead.

Collin Witzke went to the mound with a one-run lead for his first start of the season and he and the Lipscomb defense erased kept the Cardinals at bay, stranding a Louisville runner to keep the lead.

Witzke had another good inning on the mound in the bottom of the first to keep one of the best offenses in the country at bay for the second-consecutive inning.

The Bisons continued to put pressure on Louisville in the top of the third inning. Caleb Ketchup and Mason Lundgrin worked walks for a pair of base runners. Williams took advantage and swung on the second pitch he saw and sent a three-run shot over the left field fence for a 4-0 lead.

Louisville got a run back in the bottom of the fourth when a leadoff double came around and scored to cut the Lipscomb lead 4-1. The Cardinals threatened to score more with a pair of runners in scoring position, but John Cheatwood got a ground ball to get out of the inning with little damage.

After retiring Lipscomb in order in the top of the inning, the Cardinals continued to chip away at the Lipscomb lead. The score was 4-2 after five complete after Louisville took advantage of a Lipscomb error for an unearned run.

The Cardinals threatened to score for the third-straight inning in the bottom of the sixth when the leadoff man was hit by a pitch. Matthew Maldonado was called out of the pen with one out and got consecutive strikeouts looking to retire the home half of the inning with a two-run lead.

Lipscomb added a run in the top of the eighth for a 5-2 lead. Lundgrin worked a one-out walk and advanced to scoring position on a ground ball. He scored when Rudy Maxwell put a base knock to right-center field. The Louisville right-fielder made an impressive throw to home plate, but Lundgrin used speed to beat the tag for the run.

Once again, the Cardinals threatened in the bottom of the eighth with a pair of runners in scoring position, but Matthew Bohnert got a pair of ground balls to get out of the inning, stranding the runners.

Ethan Stamps added a run for the Bisons in the top of the ninth when he turned on a pitch for a leadoff home run over the left field fence for a 6-2 Bisons lead.

Trey Nordmann headed to the mound for the bottom of the ninth with three outs needed to secure the win. Nordmann struck out a pair and Bertolani threw a dart to first base to pickoff the Louisville runner after the second strikeout to secure the victory.
