THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb battled to a 3-2 victory in a tightly contested matchup at Belmont Tuesday evening at E.S. Rose Park.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lipscomb jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first with a pair of hits from Maddux Houghton and Malik Williams. Williams notched the RBI for his 53rd of the season to put Lipscomb ahead 1-0.

Dylan Bierman started on the hill for the second time this season and made quick work of Belmont, retiring them in order in just four pitches.

The Bruins tied things up in the bottom of the second when a leadoff walk came around to score after a pair of base hits for a 1-1 game heading into the third. Belmont got on the board again in the bottom of the third when a leadoff hit batter scored an unearned run for a 2-1 advantage.

Belmont looked to add to its lead in the bottom in the fourth with a walk and two singles to lead things off, but Hayden Frank came in and froze the first man he saw for the final out of the inning, keeping the Belmont lead at a run.

The pitching on both sides continued to be strong through the fifth and sixth innings with both squads keeping each other scoreless and Belmont took a 2-1 lead into the seventh frame.

Lipscomb surged back in front in the top of the seventh with a two-out rally. Ethan Stamps started the rally when he was hit by a pitch, then, a base knock from Chaz Bertolani and a walk from Caleb Ketchup loaded the bases. Houghton cashed in with a ground rule double to the right field gap for a 3-2 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh.

The Bruins threatened to answer in the home half of the inning with runners on the corners, but Matthew Maldonado came in for a relief appearance and struck out Belmont's best hitter to keep the one-run lead.

Lipscomb tried to add to its lead with another two-out rally in the top of the eighth with back-to-back two-out knocks, but a pickoff ended the inning with the Bisons' lead at a run. Maldonado continued to deal in the bottom of the eighth, retiring Belmont in order, sending the game to the ninth inning.

Trey Nordmann notched his eighth save of the season, shutting down Belmont in just eight pitches in the bottom of the ninth to seal the 3-2 victory.

HERD NOTES
  • Houghton had the only multi-hit game for Lipscomb with two knocks.
  • Patrick Williams got the victory while Nordmann picked up the save.
  • Maldonado struck out a team-high three batters.
