THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball pulled off the comeback on the road to defeat Eastern Kentucky 7-3 in a thrilling ASUN game.

HOW IT HAPPENED

Michael Dunkelberger got off to a good start, quickly retiring the first two men he saw, but a two-out error kept things alive for the Colonels. The error didn't hurt the Bisons as Dunkelberger got the next one swinging to get out of the inning with things scoreless.

Lipscomb got its first base runner in the top of the second when Trace Willhoite worked a two-out walk, but he was stranded as things stayed quiet for the Bisons' offense.

Eastern Kentucky took the lead in the bottom of the second. After two quick outs, a walk put a base runner on and two-run shot over the left field fence gave EKU a 2-0 lead.

The Bisons' offense got going in the top of the third, starting with a one-out single up the middle by Chaz Bertolani. Consecutive hits from Caleb Ketchup and Maddux Houghton loaded the bases with one out and Mason Lundgrin cashed in when he put a ball in play to score a run, cutting into the lead 2-1. Lipscomb had two more in scoring position, but a strikeout ended the inning, limiting the damage to a run. Dunkelberger responded by retiring EKU in order, sending the game to the fourth inning.

Lipscomb had the tying run in scoring position in the top of the fourth after Rudy Maxwell singled up the middle and John Shields worked a walk, but a double play ended the inning and the Bisons' threat. Dunkelberger continued to deal in the bottom of the frame, retiring the Colonels in order for the second-consecutive inning.

Eastern Kentucky got back on the board in the bottom of the fifth when a leadoff double came around to score, pushing its lead out 3-1. Lipscomb punched back in the top of the sixth with a two-out home run from Maxwell over the left field fence to cut the lead 3-2. Trace Willhoite nearly tied things up on the next pitch, but an impressive catch at the center field wall ended the inning.

Lipscomb got the tying run in scoring position with one out in the top of the seventh when Shields led off the inning with a single through the right side and got to second on a ground ball. A walk put two runners on, forcing an EKU pitching change and a strikeout ended the inning, stranding the tying and go-ahead runs. Dunkelberger continued to work in the bottom of the seventh and got three strikeouts to keep EKU at bay.

After a scoreless eighth inning, Lipscomb needed a rally to keep the game going. The Bisons' quickly got the tying run aboard when Trace Willhoite lasered an ball at the second baseman and beat the throw to first for an infield single. A sacrifice bunt pushed the tying run to second. Down to the final out, Bertolani singled through the right side and pinch runner Hayden Skipper used his speed and slid into home plate just under the tag to tie the game 3-3.

Heading to the bottom of the ninth tied, Matthew Bohnert came in on the mound. He issued a leadoff walk but found the zone and got the next three to send the game to extra innings.

Malik Williams notched his first hit of the night in the top of the 10th with a two-out single and got to third on another Maxwell hit, but both runners were stranded to send Bohnert back to the mound. The Colonels got runners on the corners by way of a pair of walks and a tag on a deep fly ball, but Bohnert forced a sharply hit ground ball for the third out, stranding the winning run at third base.

In the top of the 11th, the Bisons once again got the go-ahead run at second base with one out after Ethan Stamps walked and Bertolani singled to left field. Lipscomb took the lead for the first time of the game when Ketchup put a ball in the right-center field gap to score the runner at third for a 4-3 lead. After an intentional walk of Houghton loaded the bases, Mason Lundgrin plated another run with a knock to left field for a 5-3 lead. The runs kept coming for Lipscomb as Williams worked a bases-loaded walk and Maxwell delivered a sacrifice fly for a 7-3 advantage. Lipscomb four runs on three hits gave it a four-run advantage heading into the bottom of the 11th frame.

Trey Nordmann came out of the bullpen for the home half of the 11th and got the three outs needed to complete the comeback and down the Colonels 7-3.
