GAME ONE
Â
Caleb Ketchup led off the game for Lipscomb with a base knock up the middle and was awarded second on a balk to give Lipscomb an early runner in scoring position, but he was caught stealing at third and a pair of strikeouts ended the Bisons' hopes in the first inning.Â
Â
Eastern Kentucky quickly got on the board with a three-run shot over the right-field fence for a 3-0 lead after the first.Â
Â
After being suspended Saturday night due to lightning, the game picked up Sunday morning in the top of the second. Both teams went to the bullpen for new arms to start things off. Lipscomb got an early base runner when
Rudy Maxwell reached on an error, but a double play ended the inning.
Kaleb Kantola was on the mound for the home half of the second and retired the Colonels in order.Â
Â
Both teams continued to pitch well, keeping each other scoreless and hitless through the fifth inning as EKU still held a 3-0 advantage.Â
Â
The Bisons threatened in the top of the sixth with back-to-back walks to leadoff the inning, but a ball caught at the fence and a pair of strikeouts ended the inning scoreless.Â
Â
Eastern Kentucky got back on the board in the bottom of the seventh with a solo home run over the right field fence for a 4-0 lead. No more runs would score as EKU closed out the 4-0 victory in game one of the double dip.Â
Â
GAME TWO
Â
The Bisons came out with more offensive life in game two of the doubleheader and took an early 1-0 lead. With two outs,
Mason Lundgrin and
Malik Williams hit back-to-back singles for a pair of base runners. Rudy maxwell cashed in with a single to left field that scored Lundgrin. A rundown at third base ended the inning, but the run counted and Lipscomb handed the ball to starter
Ike Buxton with a 1-0 lead.Â
Â
Buxton got off to a good start, retiring EKU in order with a pair of strikeouts.Â
Â
Lipscomb got back on the board in the top of the second after a pair of walks and a base knock from
Ethan Stamps loaded the bases. Back-to-back sacrifice flies gave the Bisons a 3-0 lead. The Lipscomb lead grew in the top of the fourth when Maxwell connected on a one-out double and advanced to third on a wild pitch. After
Trace Willhoite worked a walk, John shields laid down a sacrifice bunt to score Maxwell and advance Willhoite to scoring position with a 4-0 advantage. A strikeout ended the inning, but not before the Bisons added to its lead.Â
Â
EKU threatened to close the gap in the bottom of the third when it loaded the bases, but Buxton got the final out needed to strand the bases loaded and keep the shutout alive.Â
Â
Lipscomb broke things open in the top of the fourth with three more runs. After reaching on an error and a fielders' choice, respectively, Ketchup and Houghton scored when Lundgrin singled through the left side for a 6-0 lead. After moving to scoring position on a wild pitch, Lundgrin scored when Maxwell put a ball into center field for his second RBI of the game for a 7-0 advantage.Â
Â
The hits kept coming for the Bisons in the top of the fifth with a one-out single from
Ethan Stamps. Ketchup then put a deep double to center field that would've scored Stamps, but the ball bounced off the artificial turf and out of play for a ground rule double, so the runners would stay at second and third. A fly ball ended the inning and kept Lipscomb off the board for the first time in the game.Â
Â
Eastern Kentucky got back in the game in the bottom of the fifth, taking advantage of a Lipscomb error to score four runs, three of which were unearned, to tighten Lipscomb's lead 7-4.Â
Â
Tyler Legere relieved Buxton in the top of the sixth and made quick work of EKU, retiring the Colonels in order to preserve the three-run Lipscomb lead.Â
Â
After a scoreless top of the seventh, closer
Trey Nordmann entered the game for the Bisons to face the top of the EKU order. Nordmann got the final outs of the game for his 10
th save of the season, a single-season Lipscomb record.Â
