THE SHORT STORY
In a wild offensive battle, Lipscomb Baseball surged to a 16-9 victory over North Alabama in a crucial ASUN matchup.
HOW IT HAPPENED
After
Michael Dunkelberger held North Alabama scoreless in the top of the first, the Bisons jumped out in front in the home half of the inning.
Maddux Houghton got things going with a one-out double and
Malik Williams was hit by a pitch for two runners. With two-outs,
Rudy Maxwell put Lipscomb ahead when he turned on a pitch and sent it ofver the right field wall for a 3-0 Lipscomb lead after the first inning.
Lipscomb's offense continued to work in the bottom of the second with a huge seven-run inning to surge out to a 10-0 lead. A leadoff hit from
John Shields and a walk from
Ethan Stamps put two runners on and
Caleb Ketchup cashed in with a base-clearing double for a 5-0 lead. An RBI single by
Malik Williams and a three-run homer from
Trace Willhoite lifted the Bisons to a 10-0 lead after two complete innings.
North Alabama responded with a pair of runs on three hits in the top of the third and three runs in the top of the fourth to cut into the Lipscomb lead 10-5.
Lipscomb got three runs back in the bottom of the fourth.
Mason Lundgrin got the inning started with a base hit and stole second to get in scoring position. Maxwell stayed hot with a triple to right field to score Lundgrin for a 11-5 lead. After Shields was hit by a pitch, Willhoite plated the final two runs of the inning with his second home run in as many at-bats with a shot over the center-field fence for a 13-5 advantage.
North Alabama responded with a pair of runs in the top of the fifth for a 13-7 game. Once again, Lipscomb got on the board in the home half of the inning after two leadoff hits scored on a Williams double for a 15-7 advantage.
Patrick Williams came out of the bullpen in the top of the sixth and held North Alabama scoreless in the next two innings, striking out the side in the top of the seventh.
North Alabama got back on the board in the top of the eighth with a pair of runs sending the game to the bottom of the eighth with a 15-9 Lipscomb advantage.
Willhoite led off the bottom of the eighth and sent his third home run of the night over the left field fence. His team-high 13
th home run of the season pushed Lipscomb out to a 16-9 lead.
John Cheatwood was on the mound for the top of the ninth and retired the Lions with no more runs to seal the 13-9 victory.
HERD NOTES
- Maxwell, Willhoite and Ketchup had three runs while three other Bisons had two hits.
- Maxwell had a game-high six RBI while Willhoite picked up five.
- Patrick Williams picked up the win going 2.1 innings with four strikeouts and a run.
