THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball outlasted North Alabama 8-5 on Saturday evening at Dugan Field to stay in the race for the top seed in the ASUN West division.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Collin Witzke started on the mound for the seventh time this season and after walking the first batter, he settled in and retired the next three Lions he saw to keep the Lions off the board in the first.
The Lipscomb offense got going early with a leadoff double from
Caleb Ketchup. He scored when
Maddux Houghton tripled to left-center field. Head coach
Jeff Forehand waved Houghton around third to attempt an inside the park home run, but the throw got Houghton at home plate for the first out of the inning, but not before the Bisons took a 1-0 lead. The Bisons quickly loaded the bases with one out after a pair of free passes and a base knock from
Malik Williams but stranded them loaded to send the game to the second inning.
After two quick outs, North Alabama got a base hit and two walks to load the bases. Two more walks drove in two runs to give UNA a 2-1 lead after the top of the second.
Lipscomb tied the game up in the bottom of the second after
Chaz Bertolani worked a walk and scored on a single up the middle by
Mason Lundgrin. North Alabama quickly got the run back in the top of the second with a leadoff home run for a 3-2 lead.
The Bisons once again tied things up in the bottom of the third when
Malik Williams led off with a double to left-center field. After advancing to third on a deep fly ball, Williams scored when
Cam McMillan singled through the left side for a 3-3 game through three.
In the top of the fourth, the Lions retook the lead when a walk came around to score for a 4-3 lead. Once again, Lipscomb battled back and got the run back in the bottom of the inning to tie things back up.
Noah Thompson held UNA off the board in the top of the fifth and Lipscomb took advantage and by regaining the lead in the home half of the inning.
Trace Willhoite led off the inning with a double and scored when the Lions' pitcher overthrew first on a sacrifice bunt attempt for a 5-4 lead. Lipscomb loaded the bases and Lundgrin worked a two-out walk to drive another run across the plate to take a 6-4 lead into the sixth inning.
After a scoreless sixth inning,
Matthew Bohnert headed to the hill in relief and struck out the side in the top of the seventh to keep the two-run Lipscomb lead.
Lipscomb jumped out to an 8-4 lead in the bottom of the seventh when a hit batter and a walk scored on a
Rudy Maxwell RBI double.
North Alabama took advantage of a Lipscomb error in the top of the eighth to score a run and cut into the Lipscomb lead 8-5.
Trey Nordmann, however, shut the door in the top of the ninth to secure his 11
th save and 8-5 victory.
