Bisons unveil 2022 Volleyball schedule

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb volleyball head coach Brandon Rosenthal announced on Wednesday the full 2022 slate for his Bisons.

The purple and gold have 27 regular season contests on the docket – including 13 matches inside Allen Arena, 16 ASUN battles, seven opponents who made the NCAA Tournament last season and four nonconference tournaments, plus an August 20 exhibition match at Ole Miss.

Lipscomb kicks off the 2022 campaign at home with arguably the highest-profile match to ever be played in Allen Arena when the Stanford Cardinal descends on Music City (Aug. 26). The Cardinal own nine NCAA National titles, most recently in 2019, and have finished as national runner-up another eight times.

Led by head coach Kevin Hambly, they finished 19-11 last season and are the first of six opponents on the Bisons schedule that ended 2021 ranked inside the AVCA Top 30 at No. 21.

The Bisons then play a pair of crosstown matches against Tennessee State in Allen on Aug. 28, before making the short trip down the Boulevard to battle Belmont (Aug. 30) in the Curb Event Center.

The purple and gold continue their stay in Nashville with the 11th annual LUV Invite Sept. 2-3. They will host Mississippi State and Ball State on Friday before closing out the weekend against Oklahoma on Saturday.

The Bulldogs set a program record for wins last season after going 25-6 and earning their first-ever berth into the NCAA Tournament with an at-large bid. Ball State is the reigning Mid-American Conference champion, clinching its second trip to the NCAA Tournament in three years behind a 30-4 overall mark and a first-round 3-2 victory over Michigan.

From there, the Bisons will go on a three-week road trip that kicks off Sept. 9-10 in the Bluegrass State for the Louisville Invitational at the KFC Yum! Center. They will open with Xavier on day one before matching up with either Louisville or Purdue on day two.

The Cardinals are fresh off their first NCAA Final Four in program history, where they fell to eventual national champion Wisconsin in the semifinals in five sets to close the season 32-1 overall and ranked No. 3 in the final AVCA poll.

Purdue is also coming off a historic season where they went 26-7 and earned a No. 6 final ranking after dropping a match to No. 3 Pitt in the Regional Finals in four sets.

Following that, Lipscomb will travel to Lawrence, Kansas for the Jayhawk Classic where it will wrap up its nonconference slate with matches against Kansas (Sept. 15), Omaha (Sept. 16) and UCF (Sept. 17).

Kansas defeated Oregon (3-0) and No. 14 Creighton (3-1) in the NCAA Tournament before losing to Pittsburgh, while UCF knocked off Pepperdine (3-1) in the first round before falling in five sets to No. 13 UCLA. The Jayhawks finished No. 19 in the final poll, while UCF was No. 28.

The Bisons kick off ASUN play on Sept. 23 with a trip to Eastern Kentucky before taking on Bellarmine on Sept. 24. Following that weekend, the purple and gold will finally return home for a pair of matches against North Florida (Sept. 30) and Jacksonville (Oct. 1).

Lipscomb then gets back on the road for its lone trip of the season to the Sunshine State, taking on reigning ASUN champion FGCU on Oct. 7 in Fort Myers and Stetson on Oct. 9 in DeLand.

The Bisons will then take on ASUN newcomer Austin Peay in back-to-back matches as the Govs visit Allen Arena on Oct. 12 before hosting the Bisons on Oct. 14.

Lipscomb will turn its attention to the back half of the conference slate where they will play five home matches in its first seven games. Central Arkansas (Oct. 21) and North Alabama (Oct. 22) come to Nashville before the Bisons make a quick pitstop on the east coast.

They will visit another ASUN newcomer Queens on Oct. 28 before an anticipated matchup with Liberty on Halloween eve (Oct. 30).

The purple and gold hosts Jacksonville State (Nov. 4) before welcoming Kennesaw State twice on Nov. 5 and Nov. 11 to wrap up the home portion of its schedule.

Lipscomb's 2022 regular season concludes with a trip to Florence, Alabama facing the Lions on Nov. 13.

The ASUN Championship returns to Allen Arena for the eighth time on Nov. 17-19, and its first since 2017. The Bisons earned the right to host the tournament after winning the ASUN crown in the spring of 2021.
