HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb was undaunted early when stepping on the pitch at the home of the No. 5 Kentucky Wildcats and was aggressive early. In the 7' minute,
Malachi Jones forced a turnover in the Bisons' attacking third and put a shot on goal that a charging Kentucky keeper saved.
Kentucky, however, capitalized on one of its first attacking opportunities and got on the board in the 11' minute for an early 1-0 Wildcats lead.
After back-and-forth action,
Javanne Smith came in and made an immediate impact, forcing a turnover and getting through a host of defenders to put another shot on frame, but was unable to get the shot past the keeper.
In the 34' minute, Lipscomb scored, but the goal was negated by a close offsides call and the Bisons continued to search for the strike.
Lipscomb outshot Kentucky 4-3 in the first half and directed three of those shots on goal but were behind 1-0 at the halftime break.
The Wildcats got on the board again early in the second half after a foul set up a set piece in a dangerous position.
Michael Sibley made a beautiful save on the resulting free kick play, but the ball went out for a corner. Kentucky capitalized on the corner kick with a header goal for a 2-0 advantage.
Lipscomb fought back though and got on the board in the 58' minute when
Tyrese Spicer collected an attempted clearance on a corner kick and banged a right-footed shot off the far post and in to cut the Wildcats' lead 2-1.
The momentum shifted to the Bisons' favor and the equalizer came shortly after in the 61' minute when
Ploutarchos Alonefti finally found the back of the net after a flurry of shots by the Bisons.
Second half action continued with a Kentucky goal in the 69' minute when it scored on a free kick just outside from about 22-yards out to retake a 3-2 lead.
The pace continued to be quick from both sides and Spicer tried to connect on his second goal of the night with a header on a
Malachi Jones cross, but his shot went to the keeper's arms.
The Bisons had a big opportunity in the 85' minute when Spicer put a ball in the box to a waiting
Hayes Wood, but his header grazed just over the woodwork as Lipscomb continued to search for the equalizer.
Lipscomb fought until the very last whistle, creating a couple of good chances in the final minute of the match, but was ultimately unable to get the equalizer as it fell on the road at No. 5 Kentucky.
