THE SHORT STORY
Despite third quarter comeback, Lipscomb fell to Kennesaw State for their first loss in ASUN play Thursday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Owls got off to a 6-1 advantage a minute into the contest, shooting the ball at an efficient rate in the early going.
Lipscomb battled to even the score on a long two-point jumper from
Aleah Sorrentino with 4:09 left in the first quarter.
The remainder of the quarter saw little scoring as the squads combined for four points to close out the quarter in a standoff at 15.
Shooting woes would carry into the second frame for the Bisons which allow KSU to go on a run in the middle portion of the quarter.
The Owls played a physical full court man defense which prevented the Bisons from getting into a rhythm offensively.
Lipscomb's poor shooting combined with turnover issues further helped the Owls stretch their lead to as much as 15 in the quarter.
The Bisons closed the quarter on a 5-0 run with a three-pointer from
Bella Vinson plus a tough layup inside by
Blythe Pearson to cut their deficit to 10 at halftime.
KSU controlled the boards with a 10-rebound edge (34-24) over the Bisons at halftime. The Owls also shot 44.1 percent from the floor while the Bisons shot just 37 percent.
Aleah Sorrentino led the way for the Herd with nine first half points and five rebounds, followed by
Bella Vinson who added seven.
Lipscomb shows some fight in the third quarter, cutting their deficit to four for the second time in the frame with 3:44 remaining in the quarter.
The Bisons went cold again offensively but ramped up the intensity defensively, holding the Owls to just four made shots (4-of-14) in the third frame to keep them in it.
In the fourth, the Owls knocked down shot after shot, never allowing Lipscomb back into the contest.
Ultimately, the Bisons fell to the Owls 71-53 for their first ASUN loss of the season.
