Match Recap: Women's Tennis |

Women’s Tennis Falls 5-2 to Western Kentucky

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's tennis took on the Western Kentucky Hilltoppers in a Friday matinee showdown at the Ensworth High School Tennis Center. Despite strong singles performances from the Bisons, Lipscomb took home their first loss of the season in a 5-2 defeat from the Hilltoppers.

"I think all in all this weekend the girls played pretty decent," said head coach Jamie Aid. "At the end of the day, they had a dominating match on Friday night and then rolled right into Saturday and we were a little nervous. They're such a young team and I think there is a great lesson in the Western Kentucky match that you can't play scared tennis."

Western Kentucky took the opening point as they claimed doubles victories on courts two and three. Sasha Dobranos and Sofiia Paladi competed aggressively for the Bisons at the top spot but their match went unfinished at 5-4 as the Hilltoppers claimed the doubles point.

Dobranos and Paladi continued their aggressive campaigns as they each claimed straight-set victories on courts one and two respectively. Paladi put down her Hilltopper foe 6-3, 6-1 to open the singles scoring in Lipscomb's favor, closely followed by Dobranos who bested her opponent 6-1, 6-2 to give Lipscomb the 2-1 point lead.

The Hilltoppers kept the pressure on the Bisons as Taisia Yakunina was defeated on court five 6-0, 6-1 by her foe. Anja Trbeznik and Liza Diachekno put up valiant efforts on courts three and four but were turned away by their opponents in straight-set losses.

Freshman Alina Cherniaieva took her opponent to three sets before eventually falling 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 to her Western Kentucky foe.

"Sasha and Sofiia had a great weekend, so I'm excited to see them really step up in those one and two spots and I'm looking forward to getting us back to work this week," Aid continued. "With such a young team, we have really been working on being our own biggest cheerleader, not our biggest critic, by just trying to get in the right mentality and continuing to be positive throughout our matches."
