Men’s Basketball Delivers Commanding 106-81 Win over Bulldogs

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb men's basketball returned home to Allena Arena Saturday afternoon to face off with Alabama A&M. The Bisons dominated both the offensive and defensive sides of the game and emerged victorious with a 106-81 win for their third consecutive win of the season.

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Bisons may have lost the tipoff to begin Saturday's matchup, but the squad bounced back right away. Joe Anderson opened the scoring for the matchup between the Bisons and the Bulldogs as he launched a clean three in from the corner pocket to give the Purple and Gold the momentum from the get-go.

Lipscomb battled with Alabama AM for control of the game for the opening five minutes as the Bulldogs made a 7-5 run over the Bisons to come within a point of the Bisons' early lead. The Herd soon hit their stride, however, and went on a 12-2 run to separate themselves from their visitors, kicked off by a steal from Derrin Boyd.

TJ Johnson found the basket for the first time with a quick three from the corner to extend Lipscomb's lead to 17-7 right on the seven-minute mark.

The Bulldogs drew a shooting foul and put two points on the board, but the Bisons were right back on the attack as Anderson pick-pocketed one of Alabama A&M's players and made his way uncontested into Lipscomb's attacking end for an easy layup.

The Purple and Gold found another gear with their three-point shooting in that match as AJ McGinnis and Owen McCormack logged back-to-back threes to push the Bisons up to a 17-point lead over the Bulldogs just over halfway through the first frame. Boyd put up a further two threes to extend the Bisons' stay as the offensive force in the match as the squad went up 38-18 with six minutes left until the half.

Cody Head joined the fray with a three of his own to push the Bisons on to a 43-20 lead with just under four minutes remaining in the first half. Will Pruitt logged a pair of layups to add to Lipscomb's commanding first half performance, but a three from McGinnis and a set of made free-throws from McCormack held off the Bulldogs' late surge and gave the Bisons a 23-point cushion going into the halftime break.

The Bisons got right back to it once play resumed with Pruitt logging a steal in Alabama A&M's first play of the second half and sending it on to Anderson who made a fast break layup to set the tone for another big half for Lipscomb. The Herd combined for six steals and four blocks in the second half, putting enormous pressure on the Bulldogs' offense whenever they attempted to make a run.

Pruitt made the next advance for the Bisons' offense, converting a steal from McCormack into a driving layup to take Lipscomb up 55-30 over Alabama A&M. After the Bulldogs drew a shooting foul, McGinnis launched another three pointer following a block from Dylan Faulkner to put the Bisons back on track and keep the momentum flowing in Lipscomb's favor.

Pruitt, Boyd, and McGinnis continued to run up the Bisons' total to a 75-39 lead just under five minutes into the second half. Head then stepped up with another pair of threes and was joined in the three-point total by TJ Johnson to send Lipscomb up into a 41-point lead with 12 minutes left on the clock.

The Bulldogs made a series of brief surges on the boards to chip away at Lipscomb's lead, first climbing up to 50 points in the match before a drawn foul and a dunk from Boyd put the Bisons right back in the drivers' seat for the second half. They then went on a six point run that was cut off by a driving layup from Rylan Houck that brought the Bisons within four points of the 100-point mark with a little over five minutes remaining in the game.

Alabama A&M turned around and put up a layup to try and start something cooking, but Jason Montgomery made his mark on the match with a quick three of his own to push the Bisons to a 99-66 lead. A pair of free throws from Head brought the Bisons past the 100-point threshold and cut off a 9-0 run from the Bulldogs as time wound down.

Play grew more contentious as both teams fought for the last few points of the game with possession changing hands quickly and frequently, but a layup from Hank Hutcheson and a three-pointer from Montgomery stood as the Bisons' final points of the match and Lipscomb claimed their third consecutive win with a 106-81 victory over the Bulldogs.
