HOW IT HAPPENED

Lipscomb earned their fifth conference win in game one of their weekend series against the Liberty Flames thanks to two runs in the opening inning and shutdown pitching from Logan Van Treeck.

Van Treeck pitched a complete game in his first start this season on what ended up being a career outing for the junior from Lincoln, Nebraska, who threw seven strikeouts.

His only run or hits given up came in the first inning while retiring his final 18 batters. Out of the 117 pitches he threw, 84 were strikes. As a result, Van Treeck moved to 2-3 on the year.

The only runs of the contest for either team came in the first inning. The Flames led things off with two singles that dropped into left field. Van Treeck then struck out his first batter, but the Flames notched their final hit of the day, followed by a sacrifice fly to center field to score one.

In the Bisons first plate appearances, Alex Vergara homered for the seventh time this season, tied for first on the team, and then an inside-the-park home run for Trace Willhoite gave Lipscomb a edge 2-1.

The Bisons' had ten hits on the day but stranded 12 base runners. However, pitching and defense made up for the lack of scoring. The Bisons' infield specifically made several effort plays to prevent any momentum from going the Flame's way.

Lipscomb was able to notch their second win over Liberty in program history and look to win their first-ever series against the Flames on Saturday. Liberty was picked to win the ASUN in the preseason.
