Baseball Claims First-Ever Series Over Flames With Saturday Victory

HOW IT HAPPENED

Lipscomb claimed their first series win over Liberty in program history, defeating the Flames who were picked to finish first in the conference, 8-7 on a windy day at Ken Dugan Field.

Game two started like the series' first game, with no scoring as pitching and defense reigned. The Bisons' starter on the hill, Brayden Tucker, went five innings allowing just one hit with five strikeouts before being pulled ahead of the sixth.

Liberty took advantage of the pitching change by the Bisons and rallied off three runs to break the ice in a scoreless game until that point. Their lead did not last long, as Lipscomb answered with five runs sequence in the bottom of the inning.

After Caleb Ketchup singled to left field, Alex Vergara belted his eighth homer of the season to bring the Bisons within a score. Later in the inning, Jake Berg singled through the ride side to plate two more, giving the Bisons their first lead (4-3). Will Lee then reached on a fielder's choice scoring another run to end Lipscomb's five-run spurt.

The runs continued to pile on as the Flames sent a three-run homer over the left field wall to jump back in from 6-5 in the seventh.

Lipscomb managed to keep their momentum going in the bottom of the seventh frame with another multi-run inning, this time plating three runs to jump back ahead.

Vergara reached on a walk with one out; then Mason Lundgrin doubled to deep right-center to even the score once again. With two outs, Austin Kelly homered to right field, sending Lundgrin home from second to cap off the three-run inning.

Liberty threatened in the ninth with a towering solo homer to right, bringing the flames within one run. They then doubled to left center to put the tying run in scoring position, but Hayden Frank forced an infield pop-up to claim their first series win over the Flames in program history with an 8-6 final in game two of the series.

Ethan Smith got the win for the Bisons on the mound, and Frank notched the save, both being their first of the season.
