HOW IT HAPPENED
The first two innings were spent with the squads settling in. The Bisons threatened in the bottom of the second with a pair of hits, but were unable to drive any runs home as things were scoreless heading into the third.
In the top of the third, Belmont threatened with a pair of runners after a hit and a walk, but
Noah Thompson forced a fly ball to center field keeping the Bruins at bay. Lipscomb responded in the bottom of the inning by putting on pressure with runners on first and second, but a strikeout ended the inning as the game remained scoreless through three innings.
The zeroes continued through the fourth and fifth innings with neither team getting much offense going.
Thompson threw five scoreless innings for the Bisons on the mound before
Chandler Giles took over in the top of the sixth. Giles put up another zero on the board to send the game to the home half of the sixth scoreless.
The first score of the game came in the bottom of the sixth when
Mason Lundgrin hit a line-drive laser over the right field fence for a leadoff solo home run and a 1-0 Lipscomb lead.
After a pitching change to start the seventh, Belmont bounced back with four runs in the top of the seventh to take a 4-1 run. The Bruins threatened to score another run, but a play at the plate got the third out needed to keep the Belmont lead at three runs.
Alex Vergara gave Lipscomb a little momentum in the bottom of the eighth with a one-out, two-strike double, giving the Bisons a runner in scoring position.
Trace Willhoite worked a two-out walk to bring the tying run to the plate, but a high fly ball ended the inning scoreless for the Bisons.
Hayden Frank came into the game in the top of the ninth on the mound and held the Bruins scoreless to give the Bisons one last chance to extend the game in the bottom of the ninth.
Lipscomb was unable to overcome the deficit as the Bisons went down in order in the bottom of the ninth as Belmont took away the 4-1 victory.
