HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb had five multi-run innings in game one of a three-game slate with Austin Peay, getting a leg up in the series with a win on Friday. The win puts the Bisons in sole possession of the first-place spot in the ASUN with five more contests left to play.
The Bisons wasted no time taking the lead as Alex Vergara sent a solo shot to left-center field in the top of the first inning. Two walks and a double would follow, but the Bisons stranded three base runners and had to settle for a 1-0 lead after half inning of play.
After a three-up, three-down inning for Logan Van Treeck and the Bisons' defense, they rallied back-to-back bombs in the second inning, with Will Lee connecting on his fourth homer of the year, and then Caleb Ketchup rounded the bases for the 13th time on the year.
Unfortunately, Austin Peay got all the runs back in the bottom half thanks to a three-run shot to deep right field.
Neither team plated runs in the third, but the Bisons erupted for six runs in the fourth to blow the game open. Parks Bouck reached on a fielding error by the third basemen, then a single from David Coppedge to left, advanced Bouck to second.
Will Lee connected on his second hit of the day on a single to third base, and another error by the Governors gave Bouck the free pass home. Caleb Ketchup also earned his second hit of game one on a single to center field, which scored Coppedge from second.
Lipscomb continued to pile on runs in the frame, with the next coming on a fielder's choice up the middle from Mason Lundgrin to score Lee and then a wild pitch with the bases loaded to score another.
The Bisons' final run of the period came on a single from Austin Kelly, his 50th hit of the season, which allowed Lundgrin to touch home.
Despite giving up the three spot in the second, Van Treeck settled in, allowing no runs in the subsequent three frames to cap off a five-inning performance where he threw 75 pitches and struck out five batters.
Trace Willhoite brought two of the four Bisons runs in the top of the sixth with a moon shot to left field. Then, Parks Bouck matched Wilhoite with a two-run blast of his own to give Lipscomb a commanding 13-3 advantage.
Austin Peay was able to get back three more as they did in the second frame on a three-run homer in the home half but runs kept scoring for the Bisons. Willhiote homered for the second time on the day, for his fourth multi-home run effort, to give Lipscomb a 15-6 lead in the top of the seventh.
In the eighth, Lee notched his second homer of the outing and the seventh for the Bisons, which set a program record for the most home runs in a game.
The Govs put another three spot on the board with a three-run double to right center, but Lipscomb closed things out in the ninth to earn their 29th victory of the year.
