Beiler Penalty Kick Goal Seals Bisons’ First ASUN Win

Box Score Final Score: Lipscomb 1, Eastern Kentucky 0
Location: Nashville, Tenn. (Lipscomb Soccer Complex)
Records: Lipscomb (5-4-0), Eastern Kentucky (1-6-1)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb women's soccer earned their first conference win Thursday night as they sent the Eastern Kentucky Colonels home empty handed with a 1-0 win. Graduate student Kelli Beiler netted the squad's goal in the match after a handball in EKU's 18-yard box afforded the Bisons a penalty kick opportunity midway through the first half.

HOW IT HAPPENED
Both squads came to Music City ready to work for their first conference matchups of the season. As the cool night kicked off, both the Bisons and the Colonels worked to maintain possession in the midfield.

Play traded back and forth in the opening minutes of play before the Bisons connected on a rush up the field. Emanuela Schürch took a rocket of shot from 25 yards out that slammed into the crossbar and set the tone for Lipscomb's aggressive offense the rest of the match.

Faith Adams, Bella Carapazza, and Schürch all recorded shots within 60 seconds of each other just over 11 minutes into play, but all were either off target or denied by the Colonels' keeper. Lucy Ream and Kelli Beiler got in on the offensive attempts as the clock approached 30 minutes gone in the match.

Marcella Cash was the next Bison to earn her chance to get on the board with a laser to the top shelf of the goal, but the Colonels' keeper punched her attempt away. The Colonels stepped up their defense to interrupt Lipscomb's connection attempts in the midfield as play stalled in the center third of the pitch for several minutes as possession changed hands over and over again.

The visitors from Kentucky committed a fatal mistake in the 35th minute of action as a Colonel defender committed a handball in the box while trying to fend off a Lipscomb offensive rush. The foul awarded the Bisons a penalty kick attempt and Beiler buried her second penalty kick of the season to put the Bisons on the board.

The Colonels put up their first shot of the match with just under four minutes left in the first half, but the Bisons maintained their lead moving into the break.

Both squads entered the second half of the match with increased intensity, Kiara Pralle showcased her immense speed early in the second frame to take a big shot 47 minutes into the match that flew wide right of the goal.

The Bisons continued to hammer the Colonels with shot after shot, putting up four attempts from four Bisons in six minutes compared to Eastern Kentucky's one shot in the same time period. Lipscomb's squad worked together to hold possession in the Colonels' defensive end and wound the clock down to claim their first conference win with a 1-0 shutout.
