NASHVILLE - Lipscomb Baseball fell in Sunday's rubber match at home against Xavier, as the Musketeers took the weekend series 2-1 over the Bisons. Lipscomb held Xavier scoreless for the first four innings, but four combined runs in the following three, and then a four-run ninth lifted the Musketeers over the Bisons, handing Lipscomb its fifth loss of the year.
The Bisons loaded the bases in each of the first two innings but got nothing out of it, and that proved to be a recurring theme in game three, as the Bisons left 15 runners stranded Sunday aftenoon.
Michael Dunkelberger got the start for the second straight Sunday outing and pitched effectively to start, with four strikeouts in the opening two frames. However, Xavier broke the silence on a hit through the left side to go up 1-0 in the fifth. The Musketeers then scored two in the sixth on a single up the middle and then a balk with a runner on third to extend their lead to three runs.
Next time up, Xavier's sophomore left fielder, Isaac Wachsmann, put another run on the board for his team with one swing of the bat, homering to left field. Lipscomb finally got a run across after seven scoreless frames in the bottom half on a hard ground out by Noah Boughton, but the Bisons still found themselves trailing 4-1.
The Bisons were unable to hold off Xavier who blew the game open in the top of the ninth, scoring four runs on five hits to go up 8-1. Lipscomb scored none in the bottom half, resulting in a seven-run loss to close the weekend.
