KNOXVILLE - Lipscomb baseball went into Knoxville against the No. 3 team in college baseball and pulled out a 9-6 victory over the Volunteers, their second win in four years over Tennessee and third in program history. The Bisons hit four home runs at Lindsey Nelson Stadium Tuesday night, two of them from graduate center fielder Alex Vergara, in the win.
Trace Willhoite put the Bisons on the board first on an RBI single through the left side to bring in Alex Vergara, who reached on a double down the left-field line in the first at-bat of the night.
The Volunteers answered with two runs in their at-bats of the first to take a one-run lead and then two more in the second to jump out to an early 4-1 advantage.
Lipscomb got a run back in the third on a solo homer from Alex Vergara over the left-field fence to bring the Bisons within two. Then, in the fourth, a double down the right field line from Freshman Jacob Tobias tied the game at four each as David Coppege and Will Lee were brought home.
Alex Vergara gave the Bisons back the lead in the fifth on another solo jack, this one to left-center. Lipscomb then extended their lead in the sixth on a pair of home runs from Coppedge and Parks Bouck to take a 7-4 lead.
After No. 3 Tennessee got a run back in the fifth, the Bisons added two more in the eighth on the double from Richey to left center and then on a wild pitch to give Lipscomb their largest lead of the night 9-5.
The Volunteers homered in the ninth, but Lipscomb got the final three outs they needed, capped off by an electric Collin Witzke strikeout to give the Bisons a 9-6 win, their first-ranked win of 2024.
