MANHATTAN, Kan. - The Lipscomb University volleyball program had no answers for the University of North Carolina, as the Tar Heels won Saturday's match in straight sets from the Morgan Family Arena on the campus of Kansas State University.
Final Score: North Carolina 3, Lipscomb 0 (25-15, 25-20, 25-17)
Location: Morgan Family Arena
Records: Lipscomb (3-5), North Carolina (5-1)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After Lipscomb scored the opening point on an attack error, North Carolina answered with seven straight, and it did not stop there. Later, leading 21-13, the Tar Heels finished the set with four of the final six points to win 25-15.
The Bisons found life early in the second set, sprinting out to a 3-0 lead after two attack errors by UNC and an ace by
Sophia Hudepohl. After the Tar Heels scored the next two points, it was another three straight for the Bisons on back-to-back kills by
Jada DiVita and
Karlie McNabb.
Trailing 7-2, North Carolina began to chip away. An 8-2 run of their own flipped the scoreboard to 10-9, forcing Lipscomb to burn a timeout. Unfortunately, the stoppage did not affect UNC as they extended their lead to 20-14 later in the frame.
The Bisons got the deficit down to four points on a Divita strike, but with set point, the Tar Heels converted on their third attempt with a Mabrey Shaffmaster kill to lead the match 2-0.
Lipscomb fought in the third to stay in check with North Carolina. The Bisons did take the 7-6 lead on a
Kelsey Schenck ace.
UNC did reclaim the lead for the rest of the set, but Lipscomb stayed pace. The Bisons did cut the deficit to 17-16 on a UNC attack error, but unfortunately, it was eight of the nine final points to the Tar Heels, including seven straight, to win the match in straight sets.
