Women's Basketball's Fourth Quarter Surge Not Enough on the Road at Stetson

DELAND, Fla. – The Lipscomb University women's basketball team used a 13-0 run in the first six-plus minutes of the fourth quarter to retake the lead, but Stetson University had seven offensive rebounds that led to six second chance points to secure the win, 74-70, Saturday afternoon from the Insight Credit Union Arena.

Final Score: Stetson 74, Lipscomb 70
Location: DeLand, Florida (Insight Credit Union Arena)
Records: Lipscomb (13-8, 6-4), Stetson (12-10, 6-4)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After Molly Heard got the opening basket for the Bisons, the Hatters erased that quick with a 10-2 run in a four-minute span before Jalyn Holcomb ended the run.

Thanks to that run, Stetson had a 22-14 lead after one quarter of play.

In the second quarter, the Hatters had control, as a Shelby Calhoun layup with 2:45 left in the period made it a 15-point advantage. However, the Bisons began to chip away, cutting the deficit to nine at the break, 44-35, after a Bella Vinson layup.

The third period was even as it could be, as the Bisons were unable to connect from long range in the stanza. However, they did convert more field goals (10) than their opponent (9), as Claira McGowan converted a layup on an out-of-bounds play with 0.5 seconds remaining to make it a 63-55 score.

That layup brought the offense to life for Lipscomb to open the fourth quarter, as they used a 13-0 run in the first six minutes of the period to flip the scoreboard, 68-63.

Down 63-62 with seven minutes remaining, the Hatters coughed it up on two straight possessions. After a Jorah Eppley lost ball and a Vinson steal, she passed to Holcomb who found Claira McGowan for the layup to give the Bisons the lead for the first time since the early stages of the first quarter.

Stetson was held to no field goals for over seven-plus minutes, as they missed their first 11 shots. Unfortunately, the lid opened back up for the Hatters they scored the next 11 points and finished the game on an 11-2 run to pick up the home victory.

The Bisons forced 10 turnovers from the Hatters in the second half, and scored 11 points off of them, but the story was the offensive boards. Stetson grabbed 17 rebounds for the game,12 in the second half, and scored 15 points on those opportunities.

KEY STATISTICS
Five Bisons scored in double figures on Saturday, led by Bella Vinson. Scoring 18 points on 8-of-16 from the field and adding two thefts, she surpassed her career high in rebounds for the second straight game. After hitting 11 on Thursday at Florida Gulf Coast, the senior grabbed 12 boards on Saturday.

Registering her third straight game with double figures in the rebound column, she has tallied two double-doubles in her last three games after securing her first-ever double-double last week versus North Alabama.

Molly Heard knocked down 12 points with five boards, while Ainhoa Cea scored 10 points with four dimes and rebounds each.

Claira McGowan and Jalyn Holcomb each added 10 more for Lipscomb in the set back. Holcomb also dished out six assists, missing her career high by one.

HERD NOTES
With 9:30 left in the fourth quarter, coming off a buzzer-beating shot to end the third, Claira McGowan's jumper in the paint secured her 1,000th career point in a Bisons uniform, becoming the 11th player in the program's Division I era to achieve this milestone.

Surpassing the plateau for her collegiate career earlier this season, the senior now has 1,050 total points.

Jalyn Holcomb will have an opportunity to make history inside Allen Arena on Wednesday night. Knocking down two 3-pointers for 206 in her career, she needs just two more to pass Anna Bowers for the all-time 3-pointers made in the program's Division I era.

UP NEXT
It will be a "pit stop" at home for the Bisons on Wednesday as they host West Georgia before going back on the road next Saturday. Tip is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Allen Arena.
