Holcomb Secures Lipscomb's Division I Scoring Record; Women's Basketball Falls in Overtime

NASHVILLE – The party of Jalyn Holcomb becoming the all-time scoring leader in Lipscomb's Division I era was spoiled by Bellarmine University, who used a 16-9 overtime session to win 86-79, Thursday evening inside Allen Arena.

Final Score: Bellarmine 86, Lipscomb 79
Location: Allen Arena
Records: Lipscomb (15-9, 8-5), Bellarmine (15-11, 6-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Knights had the early advantage 10-6 with 6:48 left in the period, but a Ainhoa Cea driving layup made it a 12-12 game with 4:15 remaining.

Elena Bertrand helped Lipscomb keep the lead through one quarter, as her 3-pointer with 1:19 left in the quarter finished off a 17-16 lead after one quarter.

In the second, the Bisons finished on a 9-2 run in the final 5:45 to increase the lead to six, 30-24, at the break. Field goals by Bella Vinson and Molly Heard, along with free throws by Bertrand and Jalyn Holcomb kept the lead in favor of the home team.

After a dismal second quarter shooting for both sides, the rim seemed to open up in the third, as Bellarmine outscored Lipscomb 26-21 in the period. The Knights used a 9-2 run of their own to start the period to reclaim the lead, 33-32.

There were six lead changes in the period, but a Claira McGowan 3-pointer kept the lead in favor of the Bisons, 51-50, at the end of the third.

Lipscomb saw Bellarmine commit fouls early and often in the fourth quarter, as the Bisons were in the bonus at the 7:23 mark in the period. However, they were unable to convert from the charity stripe, going 7-of-13.

Despite the struggles, neither team had more than a one-possession lead until Cea's driving layup with 1:43 to go made it 70-66 in favor of Lipscomb. However, two key field goals by the Knights evened the game once again.

Now at 70 all, the Bisons had one last gasp to seal the win. After a defensive stop thanks to a shot clock violation with five seconds remaining, the game-winning shot was no good and the contest was forced to an extra session.

In overtime, it was all Bellarmine. After Molly Heard tied the game at 74 with 2:46 remaining, a key 3-pointer by Hope Sivori sparked a 7-1 run to seal the contest for the visitors.

The contest saw 15 ties and 21 lead changes, including 12 changes in the second half.
