NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University baseball team used a tailor-made 5-4-3 double play to hold off a late rally by Belmont University, 5-4, Tuesday evening from E.S. Rose Park.
Final Score: Lipscomb 5, Belmont 4
Location: E.S. Rose Park
Records: Lipscomb (9-14), Belmont (9-17)
HOW IT HAPPENED
After getting runners on in the first two innings, the Bisons finally scratched across two runs in the third. After two outs and
Kai Holm singling up the middle and taking second on a stolen base,
Parks Bouck and
David Coppedge smashed back-to-back RBI doubles to give the visitors the 2-0 lead.
The Lipscomb sixth got started in a loud way.
Brady Miller sent a fly ball over the left field wall to start the frame and give the Bisons the 3-0 lead.
Collin Goda and
Jake Berg also reached and later scored after the help of a couple of Bruin errors to 5-0 advantage.
Unfortunately, the Bruins, who just went three-up and three-down in the fifth, had better changes in the sixth. An RBI double by Ty Allen plus a three-run long ball by Mike Sprockett cut the Lipscomb lead down to one, 5-4, after six.
In the eighth, a one-out double by Allen and a walk by Sprockett had the tying and go-ahead runs in scoring position. However,
Collin Bosley-Smith slammed the door with a strikeout.
In the ninth, the Bruins saw three runners reach on a walk, hit by pitch and a throwing error by Lipscomb, but
Brock Puckett induced a 5-4-3 double play to end the game and seal head coach
Jeff Forehand's 700th collegiate win.
KEY STATISTICS
David Coppedge posted his fourth 3-hit game of the season, going 3-for-5 with two RBI.
Kai Holm added two hits on the game, as eight of the nine in the starting lineup all had a base knock.
