Baseball Defeats Western Michigan to Conclude 12-Game Home Stand

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University baseball team used a five-run seventh and added two more in the eighth to defeat Western Michigan University by a 9-5 score, Tuesday afternoon inside Ken Dugan Field.

Final Score: Lipscomb 9, Western Michigan 5
Location: Ken Dugan Field
Records: Lipscomb (4-8), Western Michigan (0-11)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Broncos, despite a clean 1-2-3 inning in the top half, got their first run on the board with an RBI single by Brendan Harrity that saw Avery Theilman, who led off the inning with a double, score on the play.

In the third, it was a similar output for Western Michigan. After Cooper Hums led off with a two-bagger, Grady Mee brought him thanks to an RBI single to give the visitors a 2-0 lead.

Lipscomb did get one of the runs back in the bottom half of the frame. After a lead off walk by Kai Holm, Brady MIller's double to the left field corner allowed Holm to scamper to the plate to dent the scoreboard, 2-1.

From there, the bats were quiet on both sides. Adam Switalski came in for the middle innings and allowed a hit and walk and no runs.

In the bottom of the sixth, Lipscomb scratched across the tying run. Ryan Austin's single to center field made it a 2-2 score as Keaton Mahan scored.

After Davis Rokose fired a 1-2-3 top of the seventh, the bats came to life in the bottom half for the Bisons. With runners at the corners, David Coppedge's squeeze bunt saw Miller score the go-ahead run.

After a passed ball moved the runners to second and third, Damion Kenealy made it a 4-2 score with an RBI knock.

Following a WMU pitching change, Mahan's RBI bunt single added on for the Bisons.

Ahead 5-2, Aaron Stelogeannis made it 6-2 with his RBI single. Later, with Mahan at third, he would score on a failed pickoff attempt by Turner Doran.

Western Michigan did make things interesting in the top of the eighth, as they scored three runs to cut the deficit to 7-5.

However, in the bottom of the eighth, the home team restored order. After two quick outs, a Berg single and a 383-foot home run by Coppedge swelled the lead back to 9-5 and would be enough for the win.

In the ninth, Brock Puckett was able to erase a leadoff single by a double play from Holm to Kenealy.
