Baseball Forces Extras; Comes Up Short at No. 19 Vanderbilt

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University baseball team was able to tie the game in the top of the ninth, but a walk-off single in the 10th gave the victory to No. 19 Vanderbilt University, 5-4, Tuesday evening from Hawkins Field.

Vanderbilt is ranked 19th in the latest D1baseball.com weekly poll.

Final Score: Vanderbilt 5, Lipscomb 4 (10 innings)
Location: Nashville, Tennessee (Hawkins Field)
Records: Lipscomb (15-20), Vanderbilt (27-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
Vanderbilt got two runs on the board in the bottom of the first. After the Commodores loaded the bases, Brodie Johnston drove in the first run of the game on a sacrifice fly.

Next up, after Riley Nelson took second on a stolen base, RJ Austin came across the plate for the second run of the inning.

Lipscomb did not waste any time getting on the board in the second. With runners on second and third, Aaron Stelogeannis brought home Kai Holm to get on the board first.

On the next pitch, Collin Goda placed a squeeze bunt to bring home Damion Kenealy Jr. to tie the game at two runs each.

After a rocky start, Ryan Kutz settled in, retiring the side in order in both the second and third. However, in the fourth, Braden Holcomb untied the game with a two-run shot.

The Bisons got a run back in the seventh with an infield single by Parks Bouck

After Adam Switalski retired nine of 10 between the sixth, seventh and eighth, that opened the door for the Bisons, as they were down to their final inning and ultimately, their final out. After a lead off base knock by Stelogeannis, he moved to third on back-to-back groundouts.

With Brady Miller at the plate, and the game-tying runner 90 feet away, he bounced back from a 1-2 count and saw three straight pitches outside the plate for the walk. However, ball four went high and got away from Mac Rose and allowed Stelogeannis to tie the game at four runs apiece.

In the bottom of the ninth, Collin Bosley-Smith danced around two walks, one intentional, with a strikeout and a flyout to force extras.

Lipscomb put together two hits in the 10th and had runners at second and third, but a flyout to right ended the threat.

From there, the momentum shifted to the Vanderbilt dugout, as they used the benefit of two errors to start the bottom of the inning. Collin Barczi brought home the game winner with a walk-off single.

KEY STATISTICS
Parks Bouck led all batters with a three-hit game, his second of the season and the 36th time in his career he's produced a multi-hit game at Lipscomb.

Kai Holm put together a two-hit game for his 12th multi-hit game of the season.

The combination of Adam Switalski, Jake Lynch, Collin-Bosley Smith and Brock Puckett allowed one unearned 4.2 innings with three hits and seven strikeouts.

HERD NOTES
Tuesday's game marked the fifth time this season the Bisons have played in extra innings, the first on the road.

Since at least 2002, it marked the first time the two teams went to extra frames in the all-time series.

The Bisons pitching staff tossed 15 strikeouts, matching the most this season. Lipscomb also punched out 10 batters against North Alabama on March 30.

With the 15 strikeouts against the Commodores, it's the most for the Bisons in the matchup since at least 2013. Lipscomb retired 10 batters at the plate three times (2015, 2018, 2021) as the previous high.

UP NEXT
The Bisons will finally be back home for six of the next seven games, beginning with a three-game series with Central Arkansas to start the second half of division play in the Atlantic Sun.

First pitch of the new series starts on Thursday at 6 p.m. from Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.
