Women's Basketball Suffers Heartbreaker to West Georgia in Overtime

NASHVILLE – Despite the Lipscomb University Women's Basketball team setting school records for most blocks in a game and most blocks in a season on Wednesday night, the University of West Georgia spoiled the party with a 66-65 win over the Bisons in overtime inside Allen Arena.

Final Score: West Georgia 66, Lipscomb 65 (OT)
Location: Nashville, Tennessee (Allen Arena)
Records: Lipscomb (9-17, 6-9), West Georgia (17-9, 10-5)

HOW IT HAPPENED
The Wolves started out with a 9-4 lead before Taylor Bowen scored the next five points to even the game at nine points apiece at the first quarter media timeout.

Trailing 13-11 with 2:30 remaining in the period, the Bisons finished the quarter on a 4-0 run capped by a triple by Hannah Richardson to lead 17-13 after 10 minutes of action.

Richardson made it a six-point lead with her hook shot to start the second period.

After UWG responded with a bucket at the 8:52 mark, nobody would score for nearly four minutes, as the Wolves used a 3-pointer to make it a 19-18 lead for the Bisons.

Richardson's 3-pointer with 2:38 left made it a six-point advantage, but West Georgia scored the final seven points of the stanza to take a 27-26 lead into the locker room.

The third quarter was a back-and-forth battle, but back-to-back driving layups by Molly Heard and Richardson made it a 38-35 lead for the home squad with 4:46 left in the third.

However, UWG took a 45-43 lead after three quarters on a jumper by Asia Donald.

The Bisons tried to pull away in the fourth quarter after Maris Zurliene used a Wolves turnover to make it a five-point lead, 56-51, with three minutes to go. However, the Wolves did not quit. Trailing 59-56, Jasmine Jones used a 3-pointer to even the score with 56 seconds to go.

Both teams had the opportunity to ice the game at the free throw line, but tied up at 60, the contest would go into overtime.

Bowen started the scoring in the extra period with a second-chance layup, and the Bisons had a 65-63 lead with under two minutes to go. After Heard made it a two-point affair, on the other end, she swatted away Grace O'Gara's shot for the 13th block of the night for the home squad.

With 13 seconds left, the Wolves took advantage of missed free throws by the Bisons. After advancing the ball to their front count, they knocked down the game-winning shot with 2.7 remaining to steal the game on the road.

For the contest, it featured 14 ties and 16 lead changes.

HERD NOTES
Lipscomb posted eight blocks in the first half, and during the first quarter of the contest, the Bisons shattered the program record for blocks in a season. Now sitting at 156, the previous high came during the Bisons' first season of Division I eligibility in 2003-04 with 146.

Also in the game, the Bisons totaled 13 swats on the night, setting a program record for most blocks in a game. The previous high of 11 happened twice in 1995 against Union and earlier this season against Tennessee State.
