Baseball Holds Off Toledo; Goes for Series Split on Monday

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University Baseball team used a five-run fourth and held of a late effort by the University of Toledo to take down the Rockets, 9-7, Sunday afternoon in the third game of a four-game wrap-around series from Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.

Final Score: Lipscomb 9, Toledo 7
Location: Nashville, Tennessee (Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium)
Records: Lipscomb (5-5), Toledo (3-7)

HOW IT HAPPENED
For the third straight day, the Rockets scored in the opening inning, as an Alex McCranie single and a Luke Walton double made it 2-0 before the Bison bats could get going.

Fortunately, the bats started going right away. After Brady Miller and Hutson Miles reached base on back-to-back hits, Damion Kenealy Jr. stroked a single to quickly tie the game back up.

After Wagner popped into a double play to end the second, Lipscomb took the lead for good in the bottom half, as Simon Scharff's lead-off knock came around to score on Miles' RBI knock.

Following a Blake Carter homer in the third to make it 4-2, the Bisons tacked on five runs in the bottom of the fourth after a throwing error and a passed ball made it a 7-2 score.

Toledo went into the bullpen, and Lipscomb went to the bench in Jordan Thomas, who poked a two-RBI hit through the right side to make it a 9-2 score.

The Rockets did get one back in the fifth, along with two runs in the seventh and eighth to make it a 9-7 lead for the Bisons. However, Brock Puckett worked around a one-out hit by pitch that saw him strike out two and a chopper back to the mound to seal the win for Lipscomb.

KEY STATISTICS
Hutson Miles had three hits on the day, including two doubles, scored twice and drove in a run.

Damion Kenealy Jr. and Blake Carter also had two hits.

After Cole O'Brien had to leave the game in the second inning, Tanner Lyne (1-0) stepped up for the Bisons out of the bullpen, tossing 3.2 innings, allowing two hits and one earned run while striking out two.

UP NEXT
The Bisons will go for the split of the series with a 1 p.m. Monday matinee.
