Pippenger's Walk-Off Single Highlights Marathon Win for Baseball; Bisons Claim Season Series over Govs

NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb University Baseball team used a walk-off, pinch-hit single by Cole Pippenger to knock out Austin Peay State University by an 11-10, back-and-forth bout from Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium.

Final Score: Lipscomb 11, Austin Peay 10
Location: Nashville, Tennessee (Ken Dugan Field at Stephen Lee Marsh Stadium)
Records: Lipscomb (19-20, 12-8), Austin Peay (20-23, 10-10)

HOW IT HAPPENED
In the opening inning, APSU used a lead-off single and a walk to get the first two runs across. Andrews Matias brought in the first run home on a RBI knock, while Ty Wisdom made it a 2-0 lead on an RBI groundout.

In the bottom half, the Bisons cut the early lead by the Governors in half thanks to a Cam Pruitt sac fly.

After Jace Trautner threw a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the third, the Bisons tacked on two runs in the bottom half. After Brady Miller and Jordan Thomas reached on back-to-back walks, Cam Pruitt laced a hit to center field to score Miller.

During the play, as Thomas was motoring from second to third base, obstruction was called at third base by APSU, allowing Thomas to touch home plate and give Lipscomb the 3-2 lead.

The Govs responded in the fourth inning with three runs of their own to retake the lead, 5-3, capped by a two-run shot by DJ Merriweather.

In the bottom of the fourth, the Bisons picked up three runs as well to give the home squad the 6-5 lead. Thanks to a lead-off free pass by Kai Holm, Huston Miles brought him home to start the scoring rally.

After Alejandro Ludeiro tied the game at five runs apiece with an RBI groundout, an RBI single by Miller laced an RBI hit to right field to give Lipscomb the 7-5 advantage.

Now tried at 7-7 in the sixth, after another lead-off walk by Aaron Stelogeannis, he was able to score from first base after a Cam Pruitt single and a two-base error made it even an 8-7 Lipscomb lead.

The back-and-forth rally continued in the seventh, as Cole Johnson made it a 10-7 lead for the visitors on a three-run home run.

Despite a scoreless seventh, the Bisons began mounting the comeback in the eighth. With ducks on the pond and with two outs, Keaton Mahan tied the game at 10 with a base knock to left field to score two runs.

In the ninth, the Dugan field dimensions were a little too much for the Austin Peay hitters, as all three balls were hit around 380 feet and were all caught by Miles to keep the tie going into the bottom half.

The Bisons, who went 6-for-13 with two outs in the game, added more two-out magic in the ninth, as Hutson Miles laced a triple to right field. Going to the bench, the Bisons went with freshman Cole Pippenger. On the second pitch he saw from Jackson Hohensee, he recorded a base knock to center field to seal the walk-off win.

HERD NOTES
With the win, Lipscomb secures the weekend and overall series from Austin Peay. The Bisons are 4-1 against the Governors this season after taking two of three in Clarksville back in March.

Posting his third triple in as many games, Hutson Miles matched the school record for triples in a season with his fifth of the year on Saturday. He ties Michael Gigliotti (2016), Jonathan Allison (2014) and Justin Sanders (2009) for the most triples in Lipscomb's Division I era.
