Baseball Falters Late to MTSU

MURFREESBORO, Tenn. – An eighth inning miscue was the deciding factor in Tuesday's midweek bout with Lipscomb University and Middle Tennessee State University, as the Blue Raiders picked up the 5-3 win on Tuesday from Reese Smith Jr. Field.

Final Score: Middle Tennessee State 5, Lipscomb 3
Location: Murfreesboro, Tennessee (Reese Smith Jr. Field)
Records: Lipscomb (14-15), Middle Tennessee (17-16)

HOW IT HAPPENED
After a double play by Tyler Minnick helped Brock Puckett get out of a first-inning jam, the Bisons used an MTSU error that saw Keaton Mahan score on a failed pick-off attempt in inning number two.

Later, after Hutson Miles was beaned by a pitch and stole second base, Brady Miller brought him home on a back hit to center field to make it a 2-0 lead.

The Blue Raiders used a one-out walk to start a two-run fourth, as Clay Badylak and Minnick used RBI knocks to even the score at two runs apiece.

From there, pitchers on both sides put up zeros on the line score, but that all changed in the top of the seventh, as Kai Holm delivered a two-out, solo home run. His first bomb of the year gave the visiting squad a 3-2 lead.

MTSU pulled even in the eighth with a base hit by Brett Vondohlen.

Two batters later, needing one more out to take the tie to the ninth, a miscue on defense saw two runs scored on the play to give the Blue Raiders the 5-3 lead.

In the ninth, Middle Tennessee danced around two walks to earn the midweek win.

KEY STATISTICS
In the low-scoring affair, Brock Puckett, Landon Kiefer and Jevarra Martin Jr. posted scoreless innings in the midweek bout.

Brady Miller and Kai Holm delivered an RBI each, as Miller, Holm, Jordan Thomas and Cam Pruitt all had base hits.
