Box Score NASHVILLE – The Lipscomb (3-3) women’s basketball team earned a 88-67 victory over North Alabama (1-5) on Saturday afternoon, and senior Ashley Southern claimed her 1,000th career point as a Bison in the win.
Southern, who scored 21 points and grabbed 13 rebounds in the game, is just the sixth Lady Bison to top 1,000 career points in the Division I era following Jenna Bartsokas, Anna Bowers, Hannah Phillips, Courtney Boynton, and Katie Beth Allen.
“It’s exciting to see her accomplish that,” Lipscomb women’s basketball head coach Greg Brown said. “She’s playing with a lot of confidence and poise right now as a senior. It also says a lot about her teammates who know when and how to find her in rhythm. She plays off of them well, and plays in a very unselfish way while getting those points.”
Sophomore Loren Cagle also made history in the victory, notching a school single-game record 14 assists. It was the fifth consecutive game in which Cagle has set or tied her career high for assists.
“She’s really starting to settle in as a point guard,” Brown said. “She has great vision and anticipates seeing things develop. And, like she said the other day, the key to an assist is not just making a pass, but your teammates knocking shots down. She’s getting the ball to them on time and in rhythm.”
Lipscomb had four other players reach double-figures in scoring.
“They shared the ball really well today,” Brown said. “Getting to your spots and good ball movement will do that for you.”
Junior Alex Banks claimed 16 points. Senior Chandler Cooper added 12 points, all from behind the arc. Sophomores Riley Northway and Amber Fuqua both notched 10 points.
“I thought they did a great job coming off a break at continuing to work on some things we talked about after the last game,” Brown said. “I know that’s what we say every time, but we have to look for that little bit of growth.
“I thought we did a good job of limiting their looks like we talked about. I’m pleased with that. It’s good to get a win, and we have a quick turnaround which we’re excited to see how we bounce back.”
