Women's hoops loses on buzzer-beater in heart-breaking "Battle" thriller

NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb women’s basketball team lost a heart-breaker on Wednesday night as Belmont won 69-68 on a buzzer-beating three-pointer in Allen Arena.

The Lady Bisons went on a dominating 10-0 run in the fourth quarter, capped by a spinning lay-in from Jane Deason to take a 67-66 lead with just 9.2 seconds left. Lipscomb had held Belmont without a field goal for over five minutes until the game-winner.

Deason was one of five Lady Bisons in double-figures, four of which tied for the team lead with 13. Deason had a season-high high 13 on 6-11 shooting with three rebounds. 

Junior Taylor Clark earned her second double-double of the season with 13 points and a team-high 11 rebounds. She also dished out a team-best three assists. 

Sophomore Keely Morrow scored 13 points on a nearly-perfect 5-6 from the field and grabbed four rebounds. 

Freshman Casey Collier notched 13 points, had six rebounds, and swiped a team-high three steals.

Freshman Jalyn Holcomb added 10 points and five rebounds. 

The Lady Bisons had a strong first quarter, ending in a 12-0 run (which extended to 14-0 with the first basket of the second quarter), ending with a basket at the buzzer from Collier. 

The Bruins rallied off an 8-0 run of their own to regain the lead in the second quarter. 

The two teams traded three-pointers in the third, with each squad draining three deep balls in the third frame of the back-and-forth contest. 

Lipscomb falls to 2-8 with the loss, while Belmont improves to 4-5. 

 

HERD NOTES:

  • Ellie Harmeyer paced Belmont with 21 points and 15 rebounds. Maura Muensterman and Maddie Wright each added 16. 
  • Eight Lady Bisons played double-digit minutes. Clark and Collier logged the most with 36 minutes played. 
  • Belmont out-rebounded Lipscomb 43-34, and had a 14-9 assists advantage. 
  • Clark was a perfect 5-5 from the line, while Holcomb went 3-4. 
  • There were 13 lead changes and six ties in the game. Lipscomb and Belmont each led the game for exactly 18:31. The game was tied for 2:58. 


UP NEXT: Lipscomb will stay in Tennessee for a trip to UT Martin on Monday. Tip is at 11 a.m.
