Men's soccer falls to SMU in season opener

DALLAS - The Lipscomb men’s soccer team fell 3-0 in the season opener to SMU on Friday night at Wescott Field in Dallas, Texas.

After a scoreless first 23 minutes, the Mustangs’ Nicky Hernandez struck with back-to-back goals to break open the scoreless tie. 

Hernandez scored first in the 24th minute off an assist by Eddie Munjoma. Hernandez followed that with a second score just two minutes later.

SMU added a third goal right before halftime as DJ Williams netted a score in the 43rd minute.

After the three-goal barrage, the Bisons managed to hold the Mustangs scoreless for the final 47 minutes of action, but the defensive stand was too late. 

Freshmen Alex Brown, Honore Kalala, and Ruben Pedersen made their first regular season starts for the Bisons, while Alejandro Lopez and Hayes Wood also made their Purple and Gold debuts. 

Brown made three saves in his first start in the net. 

 

QUICK KICKS:

  • Lipscomb is now 0-2 all time vs SMU. 
  • Senior John Wynia was booked for a yellow card in the 70th minute, the first of the season for Lipscomb. Sophomore Ryan Dougherty was also handed a yellow. 
  • Brown, Kalala, junior Ben Locke, senior Daniel Muhlbauer, and sophomore Noah Gulden went the full 90 minutes for Lipscomb. 
  • Junior Javier Leija and sophomore Noah Gulden landed the Bisons only shots on goal. Dougherty also took a shot. 
  • SMU earned three corners to Lipscomb’s one. 
  • The Bisons were whistled for 14 fouls and the Mustangs were called for nine. 


NEXT: Lipscomb will continue its western road trip with a visit to Tulsa on Monday night. The Bisons will face off with the Golden Hurricane at 7 p.m.
