Lady Bisons lose heart breaker to No. 4 Texas

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

AUSTIN, Texas – Forget reality shows. Throw away those scripts.

If you want true drama and emotion watch a sporting event. Saturday night Lipscomb and Texas put their fans on an emotional rollercoaster as the two battled to the seventh inning for supremacy in the game.

In the end the Lady Bisons would score more runs and connect for more hits against Texas than any opponent they have faced this season.

But the scoreboard decides the outcome. When it was over Saturday night No. 4 Texas remained undefeated edging the Lady Bisons 12-11 with the deciding run in the bottom of the seventh on a fielder’s choice.

If it had been a movie there would have been a happier ending for Lipscomb players, coaches and fans.

Mary Iakopo led off the seventh for Texas with a double and advanced to third on an infield out setting the stage for the winning run.

Lipscomb  is 6-6. Texas is 14-0.

Coach Kristin Ryman urged her team to come out in attack mode and that is the Lady Bisons did scoring three runs in the first.

Texas responded with three runs in the second, two in the third, three in the fourth and three in the fifth.

But the Lady Bisons refused to give in, especially after being run-ruled 12-0 by Texas in the first day of the invitational.

Lipscomb scored two in the fifth and exploded for six in the sixth to tie the game.

Ryman sent  three pitchers to the circle – Katie Turner, Chloe Yeager and Emily Yakubowski.

It was another hard-luck night for Yakubowski, 0-5, who was credited with the loss.

Katie Turner scattered seven hits and gave up four runs, all earned, in two innings. She walked one and struck out one.

Chloe Yeager threw 1.2 innings.  She allowed four hits and four runs, all earned. She walked three and did not record a strikeout.

Yakubowski was in the circle for the final 2.2 innings. She gave up four runs on five hits. She also walked two batters.

A rugged start

The day did not start on a positive note for Lipscomb, losing 6-1 to Weber State to open the second day of the Texas Invitational at McCombs Field.

Weber State scored one run in the first. They added another in the third and four in the fifth.

The Lady Bisons answered with one run when Peyton Ward singled through the left side to score Abby Davis with two outs in the sixth.

Yakubowski started the game and gave up eight hits and six runs, five earned in 4.1 innings. She did not walk a batter and struck out four.
