Volleyball downs UAB in straight sets to improve to 3-0

NASHVILLE - Lipscomb coach Brandon Rosenthal calls this the deepest team he has ever coached.
Friday night that depth was evident as the Bisons swept UAB 3-0 at Allen Arena to improve their record to 3-0. UAB is winless in two matches. The two teams meet again Saturday at 5 p.m. in Birmingham.
Eight players were credited with kills with Lanie Wagner leading the way with 11, tying for the match high.
Alyssa Zwolensky made 14 digs. Megan Kuper and Ashley Maher each added nine with eight different players making at least one dig.
"Having so much depth is challenging," Rosenthal said. "With so many options it is a matter of what do we do and how do we do it? How do we dial it up at certain times?"
One of the beneficiaries of the depth is freshman setter Delaney Dilfer who made her third start and finished with a match high 31 assists.
"In high school you usually have one player you try to set up," Dilfer said. "With this team you can't go wrong setting to any one of them. I just set to the player the coaches tell me. It works out well."
Freshman Kamryn Bacus, who has been sidelined with a broken wrist and COVID-19 made her first-career appearance with four kills and one block assist.
"You have not seen the tip of the iceberg with Kam," Rosenthal said. "She made some key plays."
Also attesting to the depth of the team is Ashleigh Albert, a freshman setter who has found a role as a server and a defensive player. She was one of four Lipscomb players with two service aces.
"Ashleigh came here to be a setter and we have asked her to serve and play defense," Rosenthal said. "Her serving was important in this match."
The Bisons won set one 25-15, set two 25-16 and prevailed 25-22 in a set three which was tied 13 times.
"In sets two and three we did a nice job of settling in," Rosenthal said.
He called the match a tale of two different playing styles.
"Neither one is wrong, but UAB plays a slower style than we do," Rosenthal said. "We play a faster game and move the ball around.
"UAB set the ball up high. Their style of play gives you more time to think instead of just reacting. We have to understand we play a certain style, but it doesn't mean everyone plays the same as us."
