NASHVILLE – Nothing new to see here, but for the 22nd straight year, the Lipscomb University Volleyball team (16-5, 9-2 ASUN) will play in the Atlantic Sun Conference Tournament next month in Fort Myers, Florida after a three-set sweep of Queens University of Charlotte (8-16, 4-7), 26-24, 28-26, 25-22, Saturday afternoon inside Allen Arena.Â
HOW IT HAPPENED
The first set stayed close through the opening exchanges, with the Bisons using kills from Ella Durham, Madyson McCarthy and Brooklyn Fuchs to stay in front and hold a 13-12 edge.Â
After the Royals got within 14-13, the Bisons created separation with six straight points, including a Sydney Strenger kill, two McCarthy kills, a Kelsey Schenck/Strenger block and an Anna Claire Brown service ace, to move ahead 20-13. QUC worked back into the set and tied it at 24-24 on a Callie DeSchryver kill, but Brown answered with a kill from Schenck before Strenger finished the set at 26-24.
The Royals put the Bisons in an early 5-1 hole and still led 15-10 at the media following a Naomi Cole kill. LUV answered with eight straight points, beginning with a Brown kill and continuing behind Grace Jones' serve with two aces, a McCarthy kill and two more Brown kills to move in front 18-15.Â
QUC pulled back within 18-17 and later tied the set at 22-22 and 24-24 after LUV reached set point on a Brown kill. After the visitors went ahead 26-25, Brown delivered back-to-back kills to put the Bisons back in front, and a Royals attack error finished the set 28-26.
Queens moved ahead 10-6 on an Elizabeth Layson kill before Sydney Strenger's kill started a Lipscomb response, and McCarthy served through four straight points, including an ace, as the home squad went in front 11-10.Â
After Queens tied it at 11-11, Durham put down a kill and the Bisons followed with consecutive blocks to move ahead 14-11. Later, the Royals pulled within a point at 14-13, but kills from Durham, Fuchs and Brown helped the Bisons rebuild their lead to 18-13.Â
QUC later cut the margin to 21-19 and again to 24-22, but McCarthy finished the set with a kill from Schenck for a 25-22 Bisons win.
