Ognacevic drops career high 35, Bisons cruise to 98-64 win over Tennessee Wesleyan


NASHVILLE - The Lipscomb men's basketball team featured four players in double digits and cruised its way to a 98-64 win over in-state member Tennessee Wesleyan inside Allen Arena on Sunday afternoon.
 
The win halts a five-game skid and improves the Bisons to 6-7 ahead of Wednesday's showdown against No. 19 LSU in Baton Rouge. Tennessee Wesleyan remains at 10-2 as it was marked as an exhibition for the Bulldogs.

Jacob Ognacevic and Tommy Murr led the Bisons offensively, combining for 55 points on 19-of-23 shooting with six triples.

Ognacevic poured in a career high 35 points with six rebounds, while Murr added 20 points, three rebounds and four assists off the bench.

 

HOW IT HAPPENED
Lipscomb jumped out to a quick 19-17 lead in the game's first eight minutes on layup from Grant Asman, which followed seven points from Ognacevic.

Ognacevic continued to dominate in the early going, collecting 19 points and four boards in the first half.

 

The Bisons had a hard time pulling away from the Bulldogs in the first half, but Tommy Murr got hot alongside Ognacevic and he never let up. Over the next eight minutes, Murr scored 12 of his 15 first-half points, and helped Lipscomb build a 41-34 lead with 4:12 left in the half.

 

Will Pruitt scored the next eight points and drained back-to-back triples before Asman and Ognacevic connected on buckets to send Lipscomb into the half leading 53-43.

 

The Bisons shot 63 percent in the first 20 minutes and drained six triples. Ognacevic and Murr combined to score 34 of the points on 11-of-14 shooting.

Lipscomb doubled its lead in the first six minutes of the second half, 67-45, after opening on a 14-2 run, where Ognacevic poured in eight.

A couple minutes later, the Murr and Ognacevic duo were at it again, this time scoring 10 straight points for the purple and gold to push the home team's advantage to 80-52 with 9:34 to play.

 

Freshman Trae Benham, with a new hairstyle, checked into the game and immediately made an impact. The lefty buried two straight 3-pointers and scored 12 straight points for the Bisons to give them their largest lead of the game at 92-57.

 

The purple and gold sank six free throws down the stretch to seal the victory, 98-64.

Lipscomb shot 58.3 percent (35-60) from the floor overall, while hitting 11 three-pointers and 17 free throws.

The Bisons assisted on 25 of the 35 field goal makes, marking a season high for the purple and gold. Parker Hazen led the team with a career high seven assists, while KJ Johnson added six.


 
NOTES
  • Ognacevic's 35 points were the 4th-most ever scored by a Bison inside Allen Arena (Ahsan Asadullah – 40, Garrison Mathews – 37, Garrison Mathews – 36).
  • Nine players scored a point and nine grabbed a rebound. Hazen led the team with nine.
  • Benham finished with a career high 14 points and six rebounds in just 15 minutes. He was 6-of-11 shooting.
  • Pruitt recorded 10 points, seven rebounds and three assists. He, Ognacevic and Asman each grabbed two offensive boards.
  • Lipscomb won the battle of the boards 50-35, marking a season high in rebounds.
  • The 58 percent shooting was the highest since 64% at Tennessee Tech.
  • Asman finished with six points, five rebounds and three blocks.
  • Six Bisons grabbed 5+ rebounds, and five had 6+.
  • The 34-point margin was the highest of the season for the Bisons.
  • Lipscomb recorded a season high eight blocks.
