Where Are They Now? - Savanna Schubert (Women's Golf)

LIPSCOMB ATHLETICS  /  "WHERE ARE THEY NOW?"
Savanna Schubert transferred to Lipscomb University from Samford to continue her collegiate golf career. She made an immediate  impact becoming the first ever member of the women's golf team to earn ASUN Player of the Week honors in February of 2012. She also was a member of the ASUN All-Academic Team. Schubert misses the campus and the city of Nashville. She spent some time recalling some of the best aspects of her life on campus with Lipscombsports.com this week.

Name and sport played:

Savanna Schubert. I played golf.

What years did you compete for Lipscomb, and who coached you?

I left Samford after my freshman year and played golf for Lipscomb from 2011-2014. Buddy Harston was my coach.

What teammate was most memorable, and why?

Samantha Khan. She is still my best friend. I talk to her every single day on the phone. She lives in Texas now. She is married and just gave birth to her first child.

We were roommates. We both have big personalities. She is the funniest person I have ever met. She made every tournament fun, whether it was fun or not. She is so vivacious and lively. She made playing golf fun for me again at a time when I was really struggling.

What degrees have you earned, from where, and when?

B.A. in New Journalism-Communications, Lipscomb University, 2014

MEd in Elementary Education and Teaching, South Collegein Knoxville, 2016

I haveapplied to several schools to study for my doctorate.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

I really liked the atmosphere at Lipscomb. I liked it that it was small enough where I wasn't a number. I was a person. The campus was beautiful. I loved the campus. I loved the people. I loved Coach Harston. He was a big contributor to why I came.

The golf  courses around Nashville are extremely gorgeous and impeccable. They are wonderfully designed. I loved Nashville. I mean, who doesn't love  Nashville.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

My senior year, Coach Harston said that after every tournament, whether we played good or played bad, we would go to a Dairy Queen. We were like, it sounds great and wonderful. It was awesome.

Sam won her first college tournament my junior year and it was so great to watch her light up like a little Christmas tree. It was so cute.

The third would be making golfer of the week in the ASUN. I was the first one from the school. That was exciting.

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

I wanted to use the talent I had to play for a school. That was great for me. Coach Harston made me want to be better in every aspect of that word. He did a good job of mentoring me about where I needed to be on the golf course. He would say, `Schubert, your attitude is either good or bad right now'. We all knew I had an attitude and I still do. Coach Harston was really good about bringing me back down if I was far out in left field. He would tell me it was about everybody else and not me and that I needed to play with my team and not against them. He was all-around great coach.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

The campus was stunningly beautiful. I liked the layout of the campus. It was kind of like you were in a little bubble. I loved everything about the school academically. The class sizes were great.

Campus life was fun. We did a lot of different things. I loved being a part of LUmination. I miss that every single day.

What is the most valuable lessons you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

It probably sounds cliché but I realized these were the best days of my life and I better acknowledge it. I learned life is tough and it is just going to get tougher. I was playing golf for free on beautiful golf courses and living a life so many wish they had. I was so blessed to be there. It is where I think I grew up. If could move back I would still go there.

Who were your favorite professors and why?

Alan Griggs, Jimmy McCollum and Mark McGee were all great. All of them were different.

Alan Griggs was tough. He was hard on me. Jimmy McCollum was so nice.

Mark McGee was hilarious. I liked when he would go on tangents. I learned from them.

Where did you grow up?

Knoxville and Oak Ridge, Tennessee.

Where do you live, and what do you do now?

I live in Oak Ridge, but I teach third grade at Karns Elementary in the Knox County School District. I am in the middle of my fourth year teaching third grade.
