Women's Tennis owns doubles in opening weekend of conference action

 NASHVILLE – Lipscomb women's tennis opened ASUN Conference play this weekend, coming away 1-1 against Bellarmine and Liberty.

The Bisons (6-7, 1-1) blanked the Knights 6-0 on Friday before falling in a close 4-3 decision on Sunday against the Flames at the Huston-Marsh-Griffith Tennis Center.

After not securing the doubles point in six consecutive matches prior to last weekend, Lipscomb has now won four straight doubles.

They jumped on the Knights with 6-2 and 6-3 wins on Friday. Sasha Dobranos and Liza Diachenko won on court two before Kate Popova and Anja Trbeznik clinched on the top line.

In singles, the Bisons won all five pairings in straight sets. Trbeznik dominated on court four 6-1, 6-0 before Popova won 6-2, 6-3 at No. 1. Dobranos clinched the match for Lipscomb with a 6-3, 6-2 decision on court three.

Emma Zakordoniec (6-4, 6-2) and Maddox Bandy (6-0, 6-2) closed out the perfect day for the Bisons at No. 2 and No. 5, respectively.

The Bisons carried their doubles momentum over into the match against the Flames (12-3, 2-0), battling to gain the point and take a 1-0 lead.

At the top position, Popova and Trbeznik earned a 6-3 win over Liberty's Alexandra Almborg and Eloise Saraty. The Flames evened the score on court three winning 6-4, and setting the stage for Diachenko and Dobranos at No. 2.

The purple and gold duo fought valiantly after falling behind early. They fended off five clinch points to come from behind and win 7-6. It was just the fourth time in 15 matches this season that Liberty didn't capture the doubles point.

Liberty responded in singles by winning on the top two lines, to take a 2-1 advantage. Diachenko then swept 6-3, 6-3 at No. 5 to even things back up.

The Flames secured the match victory with decisions on courts four and three before Bandy rounded out the weekend with a come-from-behind win at No. 6 (5-7, 6-4, 6-2).

"All-in-all I thought the girls had really good energy throughout the weekend," head coach Jamie Aid said. "The Liberty doubles was the best doubles point we've played all year and that's great to see because it's been the weakest part of our team. They've really come along the last couple weeks.

"Liza and Sasha held of five clinch points at No. 2 and had some good momentum going into singles. We just came up short in some big moments. We look forward to having these same battles in a couple weeks."

  • Dobranos earned her team-leading seventh win in singles as a freshman.

UP NEXT
Lipscomb will wrap up home action this next week with a pair of matches. They Bisons will welcome DePaul to campus on Tuesday before hosting North Alabama on Saturday for senior day.
