Volleyball lands former Virginia libero Alex Spencer as graduate transfer

NASHVILLE – Lipscomb volleyball head coach Brandon Rosenthal bolstered his 2021-22 roster Thursday with the addition of 5-foot-11 libero/defensive specialist Alex Spencer, a graduate transfer from the University of Virginia. She will be immediately eligible for competition in the fall.

"We are excited about the addition of Alex to our program," Rosenthal said. "She brings an exceptional level of experience having played and competed for four years in the ACC at a high level.

"Being a grad student she brings a level of college experience that will help our program after losing four seniors. There is a level of maturity that Alex brings, with her natural joy and the way she plays the game, that will match up well with Lipscomb volleyball."

After completing her undergrad in Global Sustainability at UVA, Spencer will begin her pursuit for a Master's in Business Administration.

Spencer played in 101 matches across four seasons for the Cavaliers where she racked up 1,032 digs (2.90/set), 356 kills, 100 assists, 52 aces and 52.0 blocks. She eclipsed the 20-dig mark four times this season, including a career high 27 versus NC State on October 24. Her 231 digs led the team and her 4.71 digs per set were a career high.

As a freshman in 2017, Spencer made 27 starts and finished second on the team with 268 kills with a season high of 18 against Wake Forest. Her 20 aces were also the second most on the Cavs.

"I choose Lipscomb because of the amount of support and love I received from the coaches and players," Spencer said. "I felt so welcomed by the program and appreciated how much they made me feel a part of the family.

"I can't wait to join such a competitive atmosphere and to have teammates and coaches to work alongside of to uphold the success Lipscomb brings being one of the top volleyball programs in the ASUN and in Tennessee. Go Bisons!"

Spencer is a native of North Canton, Ohio and was named the District, County and Federal League Player of the Year as a senior. She also was an All-Ohio second team selection.

She joins a defensive unit at Lipscomb that will return Delaney Smith and Ashleigh Albert on the back row after the departures of Alyssa Zwolensky and Ashley Maher.

"Alex is a tremendous defender and she will continue to help our production in serve-receive having lost two backrow players and primary passers," Rosenthal said. "So it's huge to add some depth to what we already have coming in, but also crucial experience to be able to hit the ground running.

"There is no doubt in my mind that Alex is the type of player that LUV fans have always looked forward to watching. She has a contagious personality that will impress our fan base immediately."
