CODY HALE WATN

Men's Golf's Cody Hale: Where Are They Now?

Cody Hale is one of the top golfers to ever compete for Lipscomb University. Coach Ralph Samples compared him to Will Brewer. Hale was an All-ASUN First Team selection in 2005 and 2008. He was a member of the ASUN All-Freshman Team in 2004. After a four-year pro career, he still is close to the game of golf through his work with Seemore Putters. He took some time from his busy schedule to talk with Lipscombsports.com.

Name and sport played:

Cody Hale - Men's golf

What years did you compete for Lipscomb, and who coached you?

I played from 2003 through 2008. I redshirted my senior year, 2007, with plans to enter graduate school, but ended up changing plans and getting a double major. I graduated in the spring of 2008.

Coach Ralph Samples was my first coach. My last two years, 2007 and 2008, Buddy Harston was my coach.

What teammates were most memorable, and why?

There are several of them. I had a lot of great teammates over the years.

One of the first people I ever met, who I still have a friendship with today is Aaron Flenor. I met him before I ever came to Lipscomb. He caddies on the PGA Tour, and I work a lot of tour events through my job, so we still see each other out on the course.

I grew up with Dustin Lynch (country music star). He was one of my closest friends growing up. We grew up in Tullahoma together and played golf together since the time we were five or six. His father, Chuck Lynch, was the head professional at the golf course where we grew up.

DL and I went on to be roommates at Lipscomb and had some great times. I had a lot of great memories with our teams, but they are two of the most memorable and guys I am still friends with today.

Dustin picked up the guitar when we were in middle school. It was a huge passion for him. He always had a guitar in his hands. He was always trying to get better. He is a smart guy too. You could see he was very talented.

What degrees have you earned, from where, and when?

I graduated from Lipscomb in 2008 with a double major in marketing and management.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

My father, Jeff Hale, attended Lipscomb. He competed in the gymnastics program at Lipscomb in the 1970s. He introduced me to Lipscomb.

Ralph Samples offered me a full scholarship to play golf there. I loved the city of Nashville. I loved the campus. I was fortunate enough to tour a lot of different schools through my golf background. I won a state championship, and I had a number of scholarship offers, which I was thankful for.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

In the spring of 2008, we won an event earlier that year and we were invited to attend an event in Kauai, Hawaii hosted by Western Kentucky. We competed with Vanderbilt, Western Kentucky and a number of great schools. It was an incredible experience

The event was during our spring break, so we were able to extend it a little bit and stay about 10 days with the team. It was a special time.

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

Coach Samples and Buddy Harston were both a big part of my career at Lipscomb.

Coach Samples gave me the opportunity. I was looking at the academics and athletics, so it was great to be able to go to such a good school and play D1 golf.

Buddy was a great influence in terms of a coach and instructor. I played four years professionally after college and he continued to help me with my game while I was chasing my dream.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

It is such a close-knit environment. You build so many close, personal relationships because it is a small school with a community atmosphere.

I met John Higgins at Lipscomb who helped bring me into the job I have now. You never know how who are going to meet and how those relationships will develop later in life. That's one of the great things about Lipscomb. You get to know so many people involved with the university because of the size of the campus.

What is the most valuable lesson you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

You never know where the relationships you build at Lipscomb might lead you.

It is being around good people and building a lot of strong relationships which were important to me. Lipscomb gives you the opportunity to do that.

Who was your favorite professor and why?

Steve Little was an associate professor in the business department. He taught a lot of our high-level management courses. Looking back, he was my favorite professor.

The reason I remember him most is because he had so much experience. That is true of a lot of professors at Lipscomb. I probably took it for granted then, but realized how valuable that can be as you transition from college into a career.

Where did you grow up?

Tullahoma, Tennessee. I graduated from Tullahoma High School in 2003.

Where do you live, and what do you do now?

I live in Brentwood, Tennessee.

My job title at Seemore Putters is Director of Tour Operations.  I travel with the professional golf Tours (PGA, Korn Ferry, and LPGA Tours) and am fortunate enough to work with some of the best players in the world.  In addition, I also oversee of our training and certification programs worldwide and help develop the curriculums.  We certify teachers and fitters, worldwide, so they have the knowledge and tools to help golfers improve their putters.  We call the program the SeeMore Putter Institute.

Our specialty is putters. We manufacture and ship premium putters all around the world out of our facility in Franklin, TN.  We ship to approximately 50 different countries every year.

On Tour, I help facilitate all of the needs for professional athletes at the highest level. That could include fitting, teaching, and building a putter tailored to their requirements.

Generally, I am on the road about 20 weeks during the year. It is phenomenal to work with the best players in the world and be able to create environments to help any level of golfers, beginners to professionals, get better.

I met my wife, Kayla, while I was attending Lipscomb. She did not attend Lipscomb. She attended the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. We actually met through some of my friends from Tullahoma who became sorority sisters with Kayla. We met while attending a University of Tennessee football game in 2007 and we started dating shortly after.

We dated for seven years. We have been married for seven years in October.

Our son, Bowden, is two-and-a-half months old.
