Men's Golf's Aaron Flener: Where Are They Now?

Aaron Flener played golf at Lipscomb University and has continues to be involved with the game as a professional caddie on the PGA Tour. He spent some time recalling his days on the Lipscomb campus for Lipscombsports.com.

What years did you compete for Lipscomb and who coached you?

I played golf from 2001-2004 for Coach Ralph Samples.

What teammates were most memorable and why?

I had a lot of great teammates and still keep up with and hang out with some of them today. Matt Erwin and I work together as caddies on the PGA Tour. I see Cody Hale occasionally on tour working for SeeMore Putters. I try to make it to a few of Dustin Lynch's shows every year and we hang out some when we're both home at the same time.

What degrees have you earned and from where?

I earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management from Lipscomb with minors in Bible and Computer Information Systems.

Why did you attend Lipscomb?

I went to a small high school in Glasgow, Kentucky so I was comfortable with the small school atmosphere. I attended Impact as a junior and senior in high school and Lipscomb just felt like the right place for me. Being able to be on the golf team was just a bonus. I was going to come to school at Lipscomb either way.

What is your favorite athletic memory at Lipscomb?

If you look back in Lipscomb's golf record books you won't see my name very much because I didn't play in all that many tournaments. Golf was fun, but I wasn't as dedicated to getting better as some of the other guys.

My favorite athletic memory is the first basketball game ever played in Allen Arena. Clayton Osborn made a 70-footer at the buzzer to beat North Texas. I was sitting on the third row of the student section and before I knew it, I was in the middle of the mob at center court. It was one of the coolest live sporting moments I've ever experienced.

Who influenced your athletic career at Lipscomb?

I got to know Kenny Perry when I was in high school, and he was a big part of me getting on the golf team at Lipscomb. He was my golf hero growing up so to have him help me get a chance with the team is something I'll always be grateful for.

What do you remember about Lipscomb campus life during your time here?

I remember all the time hanging out in High Rise. Playing video games and making new friends and trying to finish homework in the middle of the night that was due the next day.

I loved hanging out in the student center between classes and after chapel. And I played more hours of pick-up basketball in the SAC than I played hours of golf, that's for sure.

I was a member of Tau Phi and still maintain a lot of great friendships with guys who pledged with me and were in the club at the same time as I was. The Cowboy Shows were always a lot of fun. Made us feel a lot cooler than we really were!

What are the most valuable lessons you learned in your time at Lipscomb?

I think I learned a lot about second chances. Getting them and giving them. I didn't have the cleanest behavior slate when I was in school. But the same people that had to punish me for my slip ups were also the same people who checked in on me and encouraged me during my time there.

I wasn't a great student, so I don't remember much of what I learned academically but I learned a lot about life. I learned at the end of the day, your personal relationships are what's going to get you through.

Who were your favorite professors and why?

Charles Frasier and Jeff Mankin were two guys I really liked. I didn't love school, but I did like going to their classes just to hang out and talk to them.

Where did you grow up?
I grew up in Glasgow, Kentucky.

Where do you live, and what do you do now?
I currently live in Nashville and I'm a professional golf caddie. I currently work for J.T. Poston on the PGA Tour. I have been working with him for 3.5 years.

Before that I worked for Stephan Jaeger for two years and Kent Bulle for two years before that.
