THE SHORT STORY: Lipscomb Women's Basketball won its second-consecutive ASUN game with a 63-54 victory over Central Arkansas behind a season-high 14-point performance from
Jalyn Holcomb.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Lipscomb got out to a good start in the first quarter with tough defense and explosive offense. The Bisons used an 8-2 run to give Lipscomb a 10-5 lead with 4:54 to go in the first quarter.
Lipscomb extended its lead to 15-7 before Central Arkansas began to chip away at the lead and got back within four, but
Nicole Hemphill scored a bucket at the first quarter buzzer to give the Bisons a 19-13 lead after the first frame.
After two quick points for Lipscomb to open the second quarter, Central Arkansas scored six unanswered to cut the lead to a pair, 21-19.
Jalyn Holcomb snapped the Sugar Bears' run and a five-minute Lipscomb scoring drought with a layup and triple in back-to-back possessions to push Lipscomb back out to a seven-point lead.
Central Arkansas once again went on a run of its own and cut Lipscomb's lead 29-28, but the Bisons closed the second quarter on an 8-2 run for a 37-30 lead heading into the halftime break.
Lipscomb boasted eight scorers in the first half and shot 61% from the floor while it held Central Arkansas to just 39% shooting.
Lipscomb picked up right where it left off and scored six quick points to start the third quarter for a 43-32 lead, the largest of the game.
Central Arkansas locked down defensively and went on a 9-2 run over more than five minutes to chop the lead to six points, 47-41 with just over two minutes left in the third quarter.
The Bisons dug in and held the Sugar Bears scoreless for the final two minutes and held a 50-41 lead at the end of the third frame.
Central Arkansas scored four quick to open the final quarter and shaved the Lipscomb lead to five, 50-45.
Holcomb continued to carry the Lipscomb offense and scored her new season high 14
th points as Lipscomb pushed back out to a double-digit lead.
Central Arkansas used a 7-4 lead to shave the lead 59-54 with two minutes to go, but the Lipscomb defense clamped down and held the Sugar Bears without a bucket in its next two possessions. The Bisons were solid from the charity strip in the final minute of the game to seal the 63-54 victory and improve to 2-1 in ASUN play.
HERD NOTES
- Holcomb scored more than 10 points for the third time this season and 30th time in her career.
- Collier ended the game with six steals, a new career high.
- The Bisons outshot the Sugar Bears 45% to 35%.
- Lipscomb held the lead for over 37 minutes of the game.
- The Bisons' bench shined, scoring 30 points.
