THE SHORT STORY: Despite four players in double figures, including a season high from
Jalyn Holcomb, the Bisons pushed North Florida to overtime, but were unable to come away with the road win as the Ospreys took an 83-75 victory.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After a quick turnaround from Thursday's loss, Lipscomb quickly flushed that result and jumped all over the Ospreys 18-7 in the first quarter after shooting 57% from 3-point range on 4-of-7 attempts.
Casey Collier banked in a shot from the top of the key at the end of the shot clock to start the game before
Maddie Cook followed with a driving layup through the defense.
Jordan Peete and
Bella Vinson then knocked down back-to-back triples in a span of 30 seconds to give the Bisons a 10-0 lead, forcing UNF to call a timeout.
Peete and Vinson each added another 3-pointer before the former drained a pair of free throws to give her eight points in the frame.
Things slowed a bit for Lipscomb in the second quarter, as it shot just 30% from the floor on 3-of-10 field goals, but a 6-for-7 effort from the charity stripe kept them in front 31-28 at halftime despite UNF shooting 53%.
Jalyn Holcomb opened the frame with the Bisons fifth triple of the afternoon, giving the team its largest lead of the game at 20-7. The Ospreys got back into the game with an 11-3 run to make it a five-point game with five minutes to play in the half.
A few minutes later a pair of free throws from
Blythe Pearson stretched the advantage back to seven, but UNF closed the half on a 6-0 run as the Bisons went the final 1:50 without scoring.
The third frame saw the Ospreys connecting on just about anything they threw up, as they went 7-of-11 for a 64% clip. Cook connected on a jumper to give the Bisons a 33-30 lead early in the quarter, but UNF responded on the other end with a 6-0 run to grab its first lead of the game.
The two sides traded buckets over the next few minutes with
Sydney Shelton and Holcomb burying huge triples to keep pace with UNF down the stretch. Shelton then split the defense for a wide-open layup to put Lipscomb back in front 45-43, but UNF's Jazz Bond hit her third trey the next trip down to put them back in front. A layup at the buzzer sent the game to the fourth stanza with the home team leading 48-45.
Shelton got the fourth quarter stared with a bang as she connected on her second 3-pointer of the day to bring the Bisons back even at 48. UNF eventually used a 9-4 run that saw Bond hit another triple to put Lipscomb in a 57-52 hole with just under seven minutes to play.
The Bisons wouldn't go away however, despite UNF extending its lead to six. Peete converted on the charity stripe, before Holcomb and Collier found the bottom of the net on the next two trips to bring the Bisons within one point.
Pearson got a left-handed hook shot to fall off the back of the rim with 1:20 on the clock to give Lipscomb its first lead (64-63) since the 2:01 mark of the third quarter. UNF's Emma Broermann returned the favor on the other end to put the home team back on top the next trip down the floor.
The Ospreys missed a pair of shots at the stripe to give the Bisons one final shot at victory down 65-64 with 14.9 seconds to play.
After switching the ball out top, Holcomb took a pass and drove to the left side of the cup and drew a foul with 4.9 seconds on the clock. The sophomore stepped up and buried both shots to give Lipscomb the 66-65 lead. On the ensuing possession, Lipscomb's Peete was whistled for a foul on the inbounds. Bond connected on just one of two free throws to send the game to overtime, tied at 66.
Pearson got the overtime period started with a nothing-but-net triple from the left wing, but that would just about be all the offense could do as they hit just 2-of-8 shots, including a 1-for-5 mark from long distance.
After cutting UNF's lead to one after a bucket from Collier, the Ospreys knocked down seven free throws over the final 30 seconds to secure an 83-75 victory.
