
Volleyball battles tough in five-set loss to Jacksonville

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Lipscomb volleyball battled through five sets with Jacksonville Saturday night inside Allen Arena, but ultimately, the Dolphins managed to get the 3-2 victory with set scores of 25-21, 21-25, 25-23, 19-25, 15-11.
The loss was the first of the season for Lipscomb in ASUN Conference action as the Bisons fell to 6-9 overall and 3-1 in league play. The Dolphins improved to 8-8 and 2-2.
Freshman Courtney Jones powered the offense with a career high 20 kills and seven digs, while hitting .192 from the outside. Caroline Stogner also collected a career high 19 kills on the way to her first-career double-double with 12 digs.
Addi Pelham added 14 kills and Meg Mersman put up 12 with three blocks.
Freshman setter Sophia Hudepohl logged a career high 63 assists on the night, besting her previous high of 46. She also added seven digs and three kills.
Libero Delaney Smith recorded a season high 24 digs, her third 20+ dig performance of the year. Libby Steinhart collected a career high 13 digs while Connelly Renfrow added 10.
The Bisons are back in action next week with a scheduled road trip to south Florida to take on FGCU at 6 p.m. CT on Friday before battling Stetson at 11 a.m. Sunday.

- The Bisons got off to a quick start with an 8-1 run to open the match behind three Stogner aces.
- JU got back in the game with a 5-0 run of its own to pull within two.
- Courtney Jones and Addi Pelham righted the ship as each put down a pair of kills to push Lipscomb back out in front, 16-9.
- The Dolphins, however, scored the next seven points and used a 9-1 run to take their first lead of the night at 18-17.
- After battling to a 21-21 score, the Dolphins took the next four points to get the opening-set victory, 25-21.
- JU outhit Lipscomb .292 to .105 in the frame, despite the Bisons having more kills, 15-9.
- Stogner and Jones each had four kills, while Pelham added three.
- Hudepohl assisted 11 times.

SET 2
- After battling back-and-forth, Jacksonville grabbed the first two-point advantage at 10-8 before Lipscomb rattled off a 6-1 run to go back in front 14-11 behind two kills from Jones, a block from Mersman and an ace from Libby Steinhart.
- Down 21-20, the Bisons got three consecutive kills from Jones, Mersman and Stogner to go up 23-21 and force a JU timeout.
- Out of the break, Stogner landed back-to-back kills before Mersman and Hudepohl blocked a JU attack to get the set win, 25-21, and even the match.
- Lipscomb outhit JU .324 to .212 with 17 kills and 15 assists.
- Stogner led the way with five kills, while Jones had four and hit .800.
- There were 15 ties and eight lead changes.

SET 3
- Jones and Mersman led the offense out of the gate and helped the Bisons build a 6-2 advantage.
- After the Dolphins ran off three straight points, the set stayed within two points until a kill from Pelham and a solo block from Mersman made it 14-11 Bisons.
- Stogner landed back-to-back swings to make it 18-15, but the Dolphins reeled off five of the next six points to get back in front 20-19.
- With Lipscomb leading 21-20, Jacksonville went on a 5-2 run to get the set victory.
- JU got the victory despite just five kills in the frame with an .056 hitting percentage, but 13 errors from Lipscomb kept the door open.
- Lipscomb outhit JU .118 to .056 with 19 kills and 19 assists.
- Jones totaled seven kills and Stogner added five with eight digs.
- Smith also added eight digs.

SET 4
- Jones landed the first swing and sparked a 4-0 run to open the stanza for Lipscomb.
- After back-to-back kills from Mersman and Mischler, Jacksonville ran off four-straight points to tie things back up at 8-8.
- Pelham hammered home consecutive kills to extend the Bisons lead to 12-9, but the Dolphins just wouldn't back down with a 4-1 run to even it back up,
- Tied at 16, Lipscomb got a pair of kills from Stogner and the Bisons rode a 9-3 run to victory.
- Lipscomb outhit JU .256 to .129 with 17 kills and 17 assists.
- Six Bisons recorded kills with Pelham and Stogner leading the way with four each.

SET 5
- Jacksonville jumped out to a 5-3 lead before Mersman, Stogner and Jones each landed swings to put Lipscomb in front 6-5.
- The Dolphins took advantage of a Lipscomb attack error and backed it up with consecutive aces to go in front 10-9 and force a Bison timeout.
- JU then got a kill and back-to-back Lipscomb errors to take a 13-10 lead, forcing a Bison timeout.
- JU outhit Lipscomb .211 to .040.
- Lipscomb had eight kills and eight assists.
