THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Women's Basketball fell 69-62 on the road at TCU to open up its 2022-23 campaign. Aleah Sorrentino led Lipscomb with 21 points on the afternoon while
Jalyn Holcomb poured in 16.
Blythe Pearson and Claira McGowan also added double-digits with 10 and 11 points, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Both teams came out on the floor to open the season with a lot of energy and traded points early. Holcomb gave Lipscomb its first lead of the day with the first triple of the game for a 7-4 lead.
TCU, however, responded with a 7-0 run to retake an 11-7 lead. Holcomb stopped the bleeding with a corner three to pull the Bisons back within a point.
The Horned Frogs outscored the Bisons 5-2 over the last three minutes of the first quarter for a 16-12 lead after the first 10 minutes of action.
TCU continued to lead by a pair of baskets, but Pearson nailed her first three-pointer of the season with just over five minutes to go in the second quarter to cut the Lipscomb deficit 20-19.
Lipscomb continued to fight back and retook the lead with just under three minutes left in the second quarter when McGowan drove the basket and laid one in for a 23-22 Lipscomb lead.
The Horned Frogs then went on a 9-0 run before the halftime buzzer to take a 31-23 lead into the halftime break.
To start the third quarter, TCU took as much as a 12-point lead, but McGowan hit a massive trey to keep the Bisons in striking distance to shave the TCU lead 39-30.
The Horned Frogs took its largest lead of the afternoon with 2:30 left in the third quarter at 47-34.
Lipscomb didn't let TCU get out of striking distance with the help of Sorrentino, who scored her 16
th point in her debut in Purple and Gold in the opening minutes of the fourth quarter.
McGowan got another big bucket to go at the 6:44 mark of the fourth quarter to get Lipscomb back within single digits.
Lipscomb continued to chip away at the TCU lead and got back within seven points when Ainhoa Cea drove the basket for a 62-58 game. Momentum continued to swing in the Bisons' favor when Pearson nailed a three-pointer, making it a two-possession game.
TCU got a bucket to stop a 7-2 Lipscomb run, but Pearson fought right back with yet another triple for a 64-61 game in favor of TCU with three minutes left in regulation.
The Horned Frogs were able to hold on by going on a 5-1 run to end the game as Lipscomb fell to TCU 69-62 to open the season.
HERD NOTES
- Lipscomb nailed seven three-pointers, shooting 31% from beyond the arc.
- The Bisons out-rebounded TCU 45-37 and outshot the Horned Frogs 39% to 33%.
- Holcomb and Pearson both brought down eight boards.
- Cea dished out eight assists on the afternoon.
- The Bisons struggled with 18 turnovers.
