THE SHORT STORY
Lipscomb Baseball dropped a 16-1 decision Saturday night at Jacksonville State to snap an 11-game ASUN Conference winning streak.
HOW IT HAPPENED
Jacksonville State took an early lead in game two of the series with a big first inning. After taking a 1-0 lead after four-straight walks to start the game, a grand slam ballooned the Gamecocks lead 5-0.
The Gamecocks threatened again when it loaded the bases in the bottom of the second, but
Noah Thompson forced a fly ball and
Rudy Maxwell threw a dart from left field to retire the runner at the plate trying to tag up, retiring the side.
Lipscomb got some offense going in the top of the third when a pair of walks and a
Maddux Houghton single loaded the bases with two outs, but a ground ball ended the inning and stranded the bases loaded.
JSU plated two more runs in the bottom of the third for a 7-0 lead after three complete.
The Bisons cracked the scoreboard in the top of the fourth after Maxwell delivered a one-out triple.
Trace Willhoite cashed in with an RBI single through the left side to cut into the JSU lead 7-1. A walk gave Lipscomb two runners and one out, but a double play ended the inning with just a run.
Gavin Grubbs took over on the mound in the bottom of the fourth and kept the Gamecocks scoreless. The Bisons threatened once again in the top of the fifth with runners on the corners with a pair of outs, but a ground ball ended the inning and stranded a pair of Lipscomb runners.
JSU added three more runs in the bottom of the fifth and five more in the bottom of the eighth to take game two of the series 16-1.
